On February 2, the Department of High-Tech Crime Prevention (C50, Ministry of Public Security) and Hanoi Police issued an order to arrest and urgently search Ha Van Lam (residing in Tram Troi town, Hoai Duc district) to investigate and clarify the act of fraud and property appropriation.

According to the police, recently, a subject posted information about exchanging polymer money on social networks, causing a stir in public opinion. During the investigation, the authorities identified the suspect as Ha Van Lam. Searching the suspect's house, the police seized Lam's ATM card used to receive the fraudulent money, his phone and laptop.

Previously, around November 2015, the High-Tech Crime Prevention Police Department C50 discovered a Facebook account named “Sang Ngoc” posting an advertisement to sell counterfeit money.

The owner of a social media account with more than 700 followers offered a pretty “good” rate: 500,000 VND in real money can buy 1.7 million in fake money. One million VND in real money can be converted to 3.5 million in fake money; or 3 million VND in real money can buy 12 million in fake money...

With the conversion rate getting higher and higher, Lam's information easily preys on the greed and gullibility of many Facebook users. After tricking the victim into sending money, Lam immediately cuts off contact (blocks Facebook accounts, blocks calls, etc.). Department C50 determined that a victim had transferred money to "Sang Ngoc" to buy counterfeit money.

Tracing the suspect on the Internet, the police discovered that he resided in Hoai Duc district. Local police said he was in the phone business and had a store in Bac Tu Liem district.

Summoning the 25-year-old man to the police station, Lam initially confessed to downloading pictures of money online and posting them on Facebook "Sang Ngoc", along with the advertisement of selling counterfeit money at a bargain price to scam people.

The case is being further investigated and clarified by the authorities for handling according to the law.
