The Vinh University Medical Center Hospital was established by Decision No. 2808/QD-UBND dated July 5, 2018, of the Chairman of the People's Committee of Nghe An Province, based on the upgrading of the Vinh University Medical Center Multi-Specialty Clinic (established on January 23, 2008). The hospital is a public health service unit with autonomous operating expenses and investment (Group I), directly under the Vinh University Medical Center, operating independently with revenue, and possessing its own legal personality, seal, and bank account. The hospital's functions include serving training, scientific research, receiving and transferring medical advancements, and providing professional training for faculty members. Its mission is to provide medical examination and treatment for the public, support training and scientific research, and fulfill other tasks as stipulated in the Ministry of Health's hospital regulations.
With a history of 15 years of formation and development (2008 – 2023), especially after 5 years of establishment (2018 – 2023), as a Group I autonomous unit, despite many obstacles regarding policies, legal frameworks, etc., the hospital has gradually stabilized and developed its organizational structure, personnel, and especially its technical expertise to meet the requirements of its assigned functions and tasks: a general hospital with a planned capacity of 150 beds.
The hospital has completed its organizational structure, including: the Board of Directors, 5 functional departments, 11 clinical departments, and 4 paraclinical/pharmacy departments. Currently, the hospital has 150 staff members, including: 55 doctors (of which 2 are associate professors, 7 are PhDs, 5 are specialists in Level II, 24 are masters/specialists in Level I, etc.); 74 nurses (8 are masters, 25 are university graduates, etc.); 8 pharmacists (2 are masters, 2 are university-level pharmacists, 4 are college-level pharmacists); and 14 administrative staff (1 PhD, 5 are masters, 8 are university graduates). The hospital utilizes facilities located within the Vinh Medical University campus, covering an area of 3600m².2The complex comprises three buildings: a 9-story building housing the Outpatient Department, X-ray Department, and inpatient treatment departments; a 4-story building housing the Outpatient Department, Clinical Laboratory Department, and administrative offices; and a 2-story building housing the Infection Control Department and Pharmacy Department.
To continuously improve the quality of medical examination and treatment for the people, the hospital always focuses on developing professional and technical expertise, exploiting advanced techniques in diagnosis and treatment. In addition to existing equipment, the hospital invests annually in purchasing additional equipment from its own funds to meet the needs of the people. Currently, the hospital has basically sufficient essential equipment and some modern high-tech equipment (32-slice CT scanner, digital X-ray machine, DEXA bone density scanner, immunology testing machine, Holter electrocardiogram machine, pulse wave velocity meter for detecting peripheral artery disease, etc.) to meet the needs of medical examination and treatment, training, teaching, and scientific research. To date, the hospital has essentially implemented over 90% of the approved technical procedures, providing effective and high-quality medical examinations and treatments that have earned the trust and choice of the public and patients. It has saved the lives of many critically ill patients in the intensive care unit, bringing life, joy, and happiness to many families and society.
Currently, the hospital has successfully implemented most techniques in various specialties, such as: laparoscopic abdominal, digestive, and urinary surgery; obstetric and gynecological surgery (ovarian cyst removal, ruptured ectopic pregnancy, etc.); endoscopic ENT surgery (nasal sinus surgery, cuspid surgery, tympanic membrane repair, etc.); orthopedic and maxillofacial surgery, cleft lip and palate surgery, etc.; surgery for all types of trauma and bone fixation, especially performing advanced techniques such as hip and knee replacement surgery; effectively implementing resuscitation and hemodialysis, with nearly 60 patients (including children and adults) undergoing routine hemodialysis daily (3 sessions/day) safely; and continuing to effectively treat osteoarthritis of the knee with platelet-rich plasma.
Notably, the hospital offers many advanced techniques at the central level, such as hip and knee replacement surgery, treatment of osteoarthritis with platelet-rich plasma combined with autologous adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells, and many techniques at first and second-tier hospitals. On average, the hospital sees over 75,000 patients annually, performs over 2,000 surgeries of various types, conducts over 200,000 tests of various kinds, and develops 60-100 new techniques, including many advanced techniques…
At the same time, Vinh University Medical Center Hospital currently serves as a training facility for Vinh University Medical Center. Annually, the hospital welcomes over 2,000 students from Vinh University Medical Center for clinical practice, coursework, and graduation internships, as well as hundreds of trainees practicing skills in continuing education courses such as basic ultrasound, ENT endoscopy, patient care, and infection control.
Furthermore, the hospital actively promotes scientific research, annually undertaking 5-10 basic-level scientific projects; and two provincial-level scientific projects: "Treatment of knee osteoarthritis using platelet-rich plasma combined with autologous adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells" and "Treatment of osteoporosis effectively applied at the hospital." The hospital is currently researching a provincial-level project: "Application of mineral water with high carbon dioxide concentration in supporting the treatment of atopic dermatitis and wound healing" and several other valuable projects. In addition, the hospital serves as a place for university lecturers, students, and trainees to conduct scientific research projects in the fields of medicine, pharmacy, and hospital management, and also provides a place for lecturers to proactively work, hone their skills, and improve their professional expertise to better serve their teaching.
In addition to performing its duties of examination and treatment well, the hospital places special emphasis on developing high-quality human resources. The hospital is very concerned about the quality of its staff, sending doctors and nurses for training in various specialties, and providing advanced training. Currently, the hospital has Associate Professors, Doctors of Philosophy, specialists in several fields, and eight outstanding physicians working there. According to the hospital's quality assessment at the end of 2022 by the Nghe An Department of Health, the hospital achieved a score of 3.34/5 according to the Vietnamese Hospital Quality Assessment Criteria of the Ministry of Health.
In its pursuit of public trust, Vinh University Medical Center Hospital has resolutely changed its professional development strategy by strengthening domestic and international cooperation. The hospital has established cooperative relationships and technical support with provincial hospitals, major university hospitals, and, notably, signed a cooperation agreement in training and technology transfer in the field of cardiology with Chonnam National University Hospital – South Korea.
The hospital also excels in social work, responding to the movement for the poor. Every year, the hospital organizes charitable medical examinations and treatments in disadvantaged areas, providing free examinations and medication to thousands of people, including children, families receiving social welfare benefits, and the poor in districts such as Que Phong, Quy Chau, Con Cuong, Thanh Chuong, and those receiving social welfare benefits in Nam Dan district and Vinh City. The hospital has established a fund of nearly 300 million VND to support poor patients when they come for examinations and treatment. Particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic, despite being severely affected by the disease, the hospital maintained its operations and development. The hospital participated in epidemic prevention and control in Binh Duong, organized screening and rapid testing for Covid-19, participated in vaccination work for people, school staff and students with more than 10,000 doses, and supported the Vinh City Health Center in vaccinating many wards and communes.
In addition to its professional work in medical examination and treatment and scientific research, the hospital also pays great attention to the lives of its employees. During the two years of the pandemic, despite the extremely difficult circumstances that seemed insurmountable, the hospital still ensured salaries and income for its employees and faculty members working at the hospital.
Building upon the successes of 15 years of construction and development, the staff and doctors of Vinh University Medical Center Hospital will continue to promote the spirit of unity, proactiveness, and creativity in performing their professional duties; constantly improve the quality of medical examination and treatment at the hospital; develop human resources; and innovate the style, spirit, and attitude of service towards patient satisfaction. Simultaneously, they will perfect the organizational structure, promote the proactive and creative financial mechanism of a Group I autonomous public service unit, striving to achieve the standards of a Class II hospital with a scale of 250 beds, with high-quality personnel possessing both talent and virtue, and modern equipment… meeting the needs and improving the quality of medical examination and treatment for the people, giving patients more choices; and at the same time, serving as a good practice facility for lecturers and students of Vinh University Medical Center, contributing to improving the quality of medical training for the region and the whole country.
