Lu Van Thin is a 4th grade student at Chieu Luu Primary School - Ky Son. He has a particularly difficult situation when his father died early and his mother disappeared. Thin can only rely on his elderly grandparents. There is not enough food to eat, not enough clothes to wear, but Thin studies very well. Faced with this special situation, the Women's Union of Ky Son district has called for help and support, and has taken on the role of godmother to support him.
Ms. Kha Thi Hoai - President of the Women's Union of Ky Son district said: Thanks to the "Godmother" model, we have had the opportunity to help Thin go to school, without having to worry about dropping out of school like before. According to Ms. Hoai, through the "Godmother" program, Ky Son has been calling for support for 81 children in especially difficult circumstances who need help.
In addition to programs to support children in terms of material things, in the first 6 months of 2023, departments, branches and organizations at all levels of Ky Son district regularly pay attention to children's rights to enjoy and have fun. Departments at all levels have coordinated to organize fun and entertainment activities for children, especially children in difficult circumstances, such as organizing gift giving for children in difficult circumstances at the Launching Ceremony of the Month of Action for Children in Huu Lap commune, creating playgrounds for children in the summer in all blocks and villages in the area.
As a more favorable locality, Nghi Loc has many ways to create playgrounds and care for and protect children through coordination between departments. Notably, the coordination between the District Women's Union, Nghi Loc District Youth Union and the District Police Department in implementing communication to raise people's awareness in child protection and care; at the same time, organizing training sessions on drowning prevention skills, first aid for drowning people; preventing school violence; preventing child abuse; preventing school drugs for students at primary and secondary schools in the district. The Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee and organizations also integrate communication activities to raise awareness among members about building a healthy environment, strengthening child protection, especially during holidays, summer vacations, and the rainy season.
Meanwhile, Nghi Loc District Youth Union has launched a campaign for grassroots youth organizations to build and maintain the “Foster Children” model with the aim of providing long-term support for disadvantaged students to continue going to school. Up to now, the Youth Union organizations have undertaken long-term support for 53 students with a support level of 3 million VND/child/year. The District Women’s Union has also implemented the “Foster Children” model, currently undertaking support for 58 students in the district with a support level of 3-5 million VND/child/year.
Ms. Tran Thi Anh Tuyet - Vice Chairman of the District People's Committee said: The district always ensures children's rights so that children can exercise their right to express themselves through playgrounds and forums. Every year, we maintain coordination in organizing the Month of Action for Children, holidays for children according to appropriate themes and conditions. In addition, the prevention of accidents, injuries, and child abuse is increasingly effective. As a result, this year in the area, the number of children drowning and being abused has decreased significantly. In addition, the cultural, spiritual, recreational, and social welfare life for children is increasingly guaranteed, the comprehensive development needs of children are gradually met, and children in the blocks and hamlets in Nghi Loc enjoy all basic rights for children.
That is the slogan of the Children's Action Month 2023 with the motto: Strengthening the responsibility of Party committees, authorities, agencies, organizations, communities, society and families for children's work, especially ensuring the full implementation of children's rights; building a safe, friendly and healthy living environment for children. At the same time, speak out to denounce all acts and violations of children's rights. Proactively solve children's issues, prevent and minimize the risks of child abuse, accidents and injuries, especially drowning and traffic accidents.
Ms. Le Thi Nguyet - Head of the Department of Children's Work, for the Advancement of Women and Gender Equality said: Not only is it a goal in the month of action, in recent times, all levels, sectors and localities have paid attention to child protection and care activities, promoting the socialization of child protection, care and education. The Department of Labor - Invalids and Social Affairs coordinates with sectors, organizations and localities to review children in special circumstances and groups of children at risk of falling into special circumstances. Party committees at all levels pay attention to directing competent agencies to strictly handle cases related to children; organize the correct implementation of procedures and standards on intervening to support children who are abused, violated, and subjected to violence and groups of children at high risk of falling into special circumstances.
Regarding this, Vice Chairwoman of the People's Committee of Ky Son District, Vi Thi Quyen, said: The most difficult thing is to raise awareness for child guardians and community organizations so that children are protected from the risks of abuse. In addition, in order to protect children to meet the set goals, it is necessary to build model models, but this is still facing certain difficulties in mountainous communes. According to Ms. Quyen, up to this point, although the district has not yet screened the number of abused children, it has coordinated with the police to keep track of those at risk. Many playgrounds have been organized for children to express their thoughts and feelings. In addition, the District Child Protection and Care Steering Committee is always interested in directing implementation, organizing consultations in the community and schools, providing and connecting child protection services, coordinating propaganda at meetings on raising awareness and capacity for parents and caregivers on child protection skills, etc.
In 2023, the Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs will direct the development of pilot models for children, including: the model "Preventing child drowning" in Nam Dan district and Hoang Mai town; the model "Preventing child abuse" in Hung Nguyen and Anh Son districts; the model "Children's Forum" in Dien Chau district and SOS Children's Village; the model "Promoting children's participation in children's issues" in Yen Thanh district.
