A huge meteor explosion, with energy released 10 times more than the US bomb dropped on Hiroshima - Japan, happened in December 2018 but no one knew.

According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the explosion occurred at 11:15 a.m. on December 18, 2018, in the sky over the Bering Sea, between Russia and Alaska.

NASA said this was the second largest meteor explosion in the past 30 years, and the largest since the famous Chelyabinsky meteor explosion in 2013, Daily Mail reported.

Meteor explosions are common, but events as large as this are rare. An explosion this large only happens a few times a century.

The meteor was about 10 meters wide, weighed more than 1,500 tons and released energy equivalent to 173 kilotons of TNT.

Peter Brown of the University of Western Ontario, Canada, discovered the explosion and announced it on Twitter.
