To not be tired when waking up

March 25, 2017 07:33

For many people, going to bed early is a real challenge. Every morning you wake up tired and determined to go to bed early tonight. But then when you take your eyes off the computer screen at night, it is already past midnight.

The latest Great British Bedtime report from the Sleep Council found that 74% of Brits get less than seven hours of sleep a night, and the number of people getting less than five hours has risen from 7% to 12%.

61% of 5,002 people surveyed in 2017 said 5-7 hours is the standard for a night's sleep.

We all know how important sleep is every day. New studies show that getting more sleep makes us happier/slimmer/richer/healthier/better.

But most people are fine with varying amounts of sleep. While some people will feel tired if they get less than nine hours, others will be fine with just over four hours.

So how do you know when you should sleep? The trick is to not worry about how much sleep you get, but focus on your sleep cycles.

“The brain has its own sleep pattern. It’s not like you, it doesn’t count whether you sleep for 1 hour or 2-3-5-9 hours. The brain’s sleep cycles from non-REM sleep to REM sleep,” explains expert Laura Lefkowitz.

To ensure you wake up refreshed, just make sure you don't wake up mid-cycle - each sleep cycle lasts about 90 minutes and ideally you sleep 5-6 cycles.

Waking up mid-cycle will leave you feeling groggy and tired; waking up on time will start your day feeling refreshed.

One way to figure out when you should go to bed is to use a sleep cycle calculator. You enter the time you need to wake up and it will tell you what hours you can go to bed.

This calculation is based on the fact that it takes an average person 14 minutes to fall asleep, of course, you may not be one of them.

Sleep tracking apps are not new, but they are a way to avoid waking up in the middle of your sleep cycle while also being a smart alarm, helping you wake up most happily.
