Using three cars – a Lexus 570, a BMW 750i, and a Mercedes – Le Minh Duc and his accomplices in Hanoi pulled off an ingenious scam.

The Hanoi People's Court recently brought Le Minh Duc (born 1981, residing in Hoan Kiem district), Nguyen Canh Chung (born 1981, residing in Ba Dinh district), and Tran Duy Long (born 1989, residing in Tay Ho district) to trial for their crimes.fraud and misappropriation of property;Forging seals and documents of agencies and organizations; the crime of using forged seals and documents of agencies and organizations.

According to the allegations, in mid-2018, Duc purchased two cars, a Lexus 570 and a BMW 750i, which were smuggled in from an unknown individual for personal use.

In addition to the two cars mentioned above, Duc also borrowed a Mercedes from Mr. Phan Cao S. (born in 1981, residing in Tay Ho).

Around June 2018, Duc needed money for business investments, so he came up with the idea of using a smuggled car as collateral to get cash.

Duc asked the defendant Long to create fake vehicle registration, inspection certificates, and circulation stickers for his Lexus, BMW, and Mercedes.

Duc sent Long photos of the vehicle registration certificate, inspection certificate, inspection sticker, and road tax sticker so that Long could use Photoshop to edit them to show Le Minh Duc as the vehicle owner, changing the ID number, license plate number, chassis number, and engine number accordingly.

After completing the image files on his computer, Long sent them back to Duc via email. Duc then printed these fake documents himself.

Using this method, Long forged three identity cards belonging to Le Minh Duc and also forged three sets of vehicle registration papers for three cars.

Then Duc told the defendant Chung to use fake vehicle registration papers in Duc's name to contact the bank to borrow money, but he was unsuccessful because Duc's vehicle registration and marriage certificate were fake.

At this point, Duc asked someone to find a place to pawn his car.

The indictment alleges that the defendant Chung knew the car was smuggled and that the vehicle documents were fake, but still contacted Le Tien D. and Tran Van M., assuring them that the car's origin was legitimate to gain their trust and get them to agree to accept it as collateral.

On August 3, 2018, Duc and Chung mortgaged the Lexus 570 to Mr. M for over 1.3 billion VND. Duc embezzled this money and used it for personal purposes.

Using similar tactics, on August 4, 2018, Chung and Duc again proposed mortgaging a Mercedes car with fake registration papers, asking Mr. M. to lend them 1.5 billion VND.

Mr. M took the car for inspection and discovered that the vehicle's registration papers and chassis and engine numbers did not match, so he did not pay Duc and filed a report with the police.

The indictment identifies Duc as the mastermind, while Chung and Long are accomplices who assisted Duc in carrying out the crime.

Today's court hearing was postponed to summon additional people involved.
