Oil prices plunged after a voluntary production cut by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies (OPEC+), which accounts for 40% of the world's oil output, was less than expected.

According to Oilprice, the total voluntary cut in the first quarter of 2024 by OPEC+ members will be 2.184 million barrels/day.

However, the nearly 2.2 million barrels per day of voluntary cuts included 1 million barrels per day of voluntary cuts from Saudi Arabia and 300,000 barrels per day from Russia, bringing the actual additional cuts to around 900,000 barrels per day.

Previously, OPEC+ countries said the new additional cuts discussed were up to 2 million barrels/day.

An additional voluntary cut of around 900,000 barrels per day, if strictly implemented, could also create a small deficit in the market, which could support oil prices in the short term.

The US Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported that the oil market could see a deficit of more than 100,000 barrels per day in the first quarter of 2024.

However, according to analysts, non-OPEC+ oil production may soon make up for the shortage, limiting the rise in oil prices. Notably, US oil production is at a record 13.2 million barrels per day.

In addition, oil prices fell due to increased crude oil production and gasoline inventories in the US (the world's leading oil producer).

According to the EIA, US crude oil inventories increased by 1.6 million barrels in the week ending November 24, while distillate inventories increased by 5.2 million barrels and gasoline inventories increased by 1.8 million barrels.
