Humanity in adversity

October 20, 2010 12:10

On the morning of October 19, we followed the rescue boat of Nghi Loc District Police and the relief team of An Phu Construction and Trading Joint Stock Company to Hamlet 5 - Nghi Van Commune, one of the flooded and currently isolated areas of Nghi Loc District.

From afar, an entire hamlet with more than 80 households was submerged in water. It has been 4 days since the heavy rain, but the water level in this area has receded very slowly, the deepest point is still at a height of a person. Although it has stopped raining, 40 households in the hamlet have not returned home because the roads to the village are still cut off. Without means of transportation, without electricity, without communication, the life of the people in hamlet 5 these days is no different from a deserted island.

Through the broken trees, the canoe finally reached the yard of Uncle Kinh's family - the head of Tan Huong parish council. The three-room flat-roofed house was usually quite spacious but now it was in ruins in the water. With his shorts rolled up to his thighs, holding a box of instant noodles and two bottles of soft drinks, Uncle Kinh couldn't help but be happy: The family had only eaten rice for the past few days, now there are instant noodles and a bit of soup to improve.

The most pitiful scene is Uncle Minh's family, over 70 years old and blind in both eyes, but no matter how much we tried to persuade him these past few days, he still refused to evacuate. Partly because he thought "I'm old, if anything happens to me, I want to live and die at home", partly because he was worried about his disabled daughter who could not go. The two of them have only had instant noodles to survive these past few days.

According to Mr. Nguyen Huy Hue - Secretary of the Party Cell of Hamlet 5, Nghi Van has not had such a terrible flood in more than 30 years since the flood in 1978. The water rose so quickly that even though the situation had been predicted, the people could not cope in time.

Luckily, more than 50% of the households in the hamlet have cupboards at home, so they were able to escape the flood easily. The rest were able to take refuge in the commune People's Committee headquarters by boat. The biggest difficulty for the hamlet now is food, because if the water recedes slowly like this, it will take at least 3 more days for the water to recede completely.

Meanwhile, the local relief force of the commune and district is not much. On October 19, the relief team of An Phu Trading and Construction Joint Stock Company was the first to come to Nghi Van people. According to the plan, on October 19, Nghi Loc district will provide the commune with 120 more boxes of instant noodles.

According to Mr. Le Viet Tuan - Chairman of the Commune People's Committee, Nghi Van currently has 3 other isolated areas in addition to Hamlet 5, which are Hamlet 6, Tay Van Hamlet and Tan Son Hamlet. The lives of people here are facing many difficulties, so more than ever, they need the support of sectors, levels and social organizations.
