December 9, 2010 09:28

For the first time, the great Russian writer Lev Tolstoy comes to Vietnamese readers as a thinker in the anthology “The Way of Life – Selected Essays and Documents” recently published by Tri Thuc Publishing House, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the great writer’s death. An exhibition of photo books about Lev Tolstoy in Vietnam and the seminar “Lev Tolstoy – the thinker” were also held at Hanoi University on the afternoon of December 8.

Leo Tolstoy is one of the greatest figures of Russia, combining in himself a moral man, a genius artist, a great thinker, who during his lifetime achieved a glory previously unheard of for an author. His works, in many genres, have been translated and read enthusiastically throughout the world and have had a wide artistic, social and ideological impact for over 100 years.

In 2010, all progressive humanity celebrated the 100th anniversary of his death. Up to now, Tolstoy's literary works have been translated quite fully into Vietnamese and are loved by Vietnamese people. However, none of his philosophical or political works, not counting letters, diaries..., are known in our country. Meanwhile, this is an extremely important part of Tolstoy's legacy, highly appreciated by the whole world and has been translated into many languages. The anthology "The Way of Life - Selected Essays and Letters" has met this gap in introducing the thinker Lev Tolstoy.

Talking about the journey of making this 1,300-page book, Associate Professor Dr. Pham Vinh Cu - the person who selected, translated, introduced and annotated the book, shared: Not many people, including Russians, understand Tolstoi as a thinker, while at the same time, there were people who compared him to Buddha, Christ, Confucius or Socrates. His literary works can be printed and reprinted in millions of copies, but his philosophical and ideological works are even considered reactionary and are only printed in a modest quantity of a few hundred copies. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his death, after a month of searching for documents in Russia, with the collaboration of many admirers of Lev Tolstoi, the book "The Way of Life - Selected Essays and Letters" was published, hoping to partly satisfy readers who loved and admired him but did not really understand him.

In particular, in the issues of pedagogy, ethics, and science mentioned in this book, the philosophy of education with love has been mentioned again and again by Lev Tolstoi in many articles. As NGUT Vu The Khoi said: he persistently practiced this philosophy of education at the Jasnaja Poliana school he founded and directly taught the children of farmers on his estate. He also spent 14 years writing the textbook Vộ bộ and when he finished it, he considered himself able to close his eyes.

The seminar on the thinker Lev Tolstoy will continue on December 9, 2010 with many other important presentations by many Vietnamese writers, translators, and researchers. And at Hall 53 Nguyen Du, Hanoi, on the afternoon of December 17, 2010, there will be a seminar on Lev Tolstoy's views on God and human morality.
