(Baonghean) -At about 8:30 a.m. on March 31, 2011, the police force of Dang Son commune (Do Luong district, Nghe An) discovered subjects using boats to illegally dredge sand along the Lam river in hamlets 2 and 3 of Dang Son commune.

Dang Son Commune Police have drawn up a record and confiscated 4 locomotives. Previously, on March 14, the commune police force also discovered, arrested and handled 2 cases of illegal sand mining.

For many months now, illegal sand mining in Dang Son commune has been very complicated. Illegal sand miners use quite sophisticated tricks, often secretly mining sand at night in any location.

Many areas of fertile alluvial land in Dang Son commune were eroded, of which, the landslide was from 30 to 50m wide, some landslides were more than 100m wide and extended over 400m along the Lam River bank, especially the section belonging to hamlets 2 and 3. Many places were sucked up to 10m deep, creating very dangerous deep whirlpools.

The authorities have taken action many times, but managing sand and gravel mining activities is extremely difficult. Whenever the authorities deploy forces to inspect and handle the matter, the subjects quickly let their ships weigh anchor and head to the border area of Luu Son commune and the town.

Not only causing disorder in inland waterway traffic safety, illegal sand mining also changes the flow, seriously violating the Law on Minerals. It is worth noting that this situation has existed for many years, but local authorities have not been able to eliminate it. Most of the illegal sand mining cases that have been caught in the past have only stopped at administrative fines and confiscation of vehicles, so there is no deterrent effect.
