Memories of trains without numbers
(Baonghean.vn) In a small house in hamlet 16, Nghia Thuan commune, Thai Hoa town, we heard veteran Tran Tich - a soldier of the former No-numbered Train Group - recall the memories of the time when he and his comrades crossed the sea, carrying goods, weapons, and ammunition to support the battlefields in the South...
Born and raised in the coastal countryside of Dien Chau district, at the age of 21, he volunteered to join the army and was sent to study at the Naval Technical School (Quang Ninh). In October 1970, he was assigned to the 125th Naval Brigade (based in Hai Phong) with the task of transporting weapons to the southern battlefield on the Ho Chi Minh trail at sea.
Veteran Tran Tich talks to the young generation at the exchange session "Fueling the legendary path"
From October 1970 to July 1974, Mr. Tich and his teammates on ship 609 transported 7 shipments of supplies to the South safely. Every time he boarded the ship to take on the mission of crossing the sea, in his mind, he and his teammates were certain that there might be no return! With great will and determination, having gone through many life-and-death battles, thanks to his intelligence and steadfast courage, the "Ship Without Number" trips of him and his teammates still bravely overcame storms, faced the enemy's rain of bombs and bullets, carried thousands of tons of weapons, equipment, and ammunition, contributing to effectively supporting the army and people of the South to defeat the US and the puppet regime.
Now, when sitting and recalling the memories of his fallen comrades, he recalled: "In May 1972, the US intensified its expansion of attacks and blockades on Hai Phong port as well as the river mouths and waterways of the North. At that time, ship 609 had just docked to prepare to receive a new shipment, while he and his comrades were on duty on the ship, they discovered enemy planes flying in the sky. In the face of the enemy's close inspection, determined not to let ammunition and weapons fall into the enemy's hands, ready to sacrifice and stick to the ship, if discovered, forced to destroy the ship to keep it top secret. That time, a bomb hit the ship, killing many comrades, and he was hit by shrapnel. During the days drifting at sea, they had to face life and death. Therefore, each time they received a new mission, the soldiers were given a living memorial service. What was special was that the soldiers participating on the Ship Without Numbers were all very loyal and had a strong will. Gold, brave fighting, that is the pride of the Navy soldiers of the "No Numbered Ships"!
The former sailor is now 63 years old, retired and living locally. Although affected by war wounds that caused permanent disability, losing 30% of his health, he still continues to contribute his efforts to society. For many years, he has participated in the Veterans Association, the Elderly Association of Hamlet 16, Nghia Thuan Commune, actively mobilizing members and people in the area to develop the economy, building an increasingly prosperous homeland.
