Vietnamese ceramic paintings in France
A ceramic painting made by Vietnamese artists and craftsmen will be installed in the Town Hall of Choisy le Roi, France.
40 years ago, during the Paris negotiations (1968 - 1973) on restoring peace in Vietnam, the delegation of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam chose the city of Choisy le Roi (near Paris) as their place of residence. Part of the reason was to save costs, but the other part was because of the protection of their friends in the French Communist Party.
Historical witnesses in Vietnam and France, some are still alive and some are gone. In Choisy le Roi, fortunately, we can still meet the wife of Mayor Louis Luc -Mrs. Helene Luc, former President of the France - Vietnam Friendship Association in France, as well as patriotic overseas Vietnamese who wholeheartedly supported and helped the delegation. The historical houses here are still preserved to this day, historical stories continue to be told. In this city, right on the banks of the Seine River, there is also a square named after the Paris Agreement, a new neighborhood was built named Dong Da.
Sketch of ceramic painting commemorating the 40th anniversary of the signing of the Paris Agreement

In September 2011, the Mayor of Choisy le Roi proposed the idea of making a ceramic painting to commemorate the Vietnamese mark in this city to artist Nguyen Thu Thuy. This will be a gift from the Hanoi People's Committee to Choisy le Roi on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the signing of the Paris Agreement (1973 - 2013). After a month in Choisy le Roi, artist Nguyen Thu Thuy had the initial sketches for the painting. Next to the center are historical images, she placed images of three cities - three sworn friends standing next to each other: Hanoi (Vietnam), Choisy le Roi (France) and Lugo (Italy). “It is surprising that Choisy le Roi was very famous for Boulenger ceramics. This pottery workshop is no longer there, the pottery making profession has been lost, but this is considered the heritage of the city. Meanwhile, the city of Lugo is known for its mosaic ceramic technique, which can be seen in many churches built in the Middle Ages. So I came up with the idea of putting images of ceramics from three cities into the painting: ceramic vases from the Ly - Tran dynasties (excavated at Thang Long Imperial Citadel, Hanoi), Boulenger pottery workshop (Choisy le Roi) and a mosaic ceramic painting (Lugo). The painting shows the friendship between three cities that have similarities: all have a river flowing through them and all have traditional pottery making professions, especially the historical connection between Choisy le Roi and Hanoi”, said artist Thu Thuy.
The painting is 5m high and 4m wide, depicting a portrait of Uncle Ho, the signing ceremony of the Paris Agreement in 1973, the Vietnamese delegation participating in negotiations in front of a house in the city of Choisy le Roi, and Marc Riboud's photo protesting the Vietnam War in the US. The pieces of pottery fired in Bat Trang pottery village, Hanoi will be transported to Choisy le Roi next September. Artist Nguyen Thu Thuy and Vietnamese craftsmen will complete the painting before the 40th anniversary of the signing of the Paris Agreement.
Artist Nguyen Thu Thuy is the author.Ceramic Roadin Hanoi, recognized by the Guinness World Records as the world's largest ceramic mosaic in 2010. Recently, artist Thu Thuy and her colleagues completed a ceramic national flag on Truong Sa Lon Island (photo). The flag is made from 310,000 ceramic pieces, weighs 3.5 tons, covers an area of 310 m2 (12.4 m x 25 m), and was awarded a certificate by the Vietnam Records Organization as the largest ceramic national flag in Vietnam. The project was carried out with the idea that from the air, satellites, airplanes, Google Earth, the Vietnamese national flag can be clearly seen, contributing to affirming the sovereignty of the sea and islands of the Fatherland. |
