Prospects of new rice varieties

Mr. Dang Van Chung, Director of TT-Hue Province Plant and Animal Seed Joint Stock Company said: "Based on the results achieved from the basic testing of the 2012-2013 Winter-Spring crop and the 2013 Summer-Summer crop, we continue to test 16 promising varieties of the short-term seed group and collect some new varieties to add to the testing group in two groups: productivity and quality".

According to general assessment, rice varieties participating in the 2013 winter-spring crop testing had a growth period of 99 - 133 days, of which NH92 variety had a growth period of 133 days, and X1 variety had the shortest growth period of 99 days.

In the yield group, rice varieties NH 92 and X10 have yields equivalent to the control variety; the remaining varieties H229, DT136, TQ05, T65, DT40 have yields lower than the control variety Khang Dan (64 quintals/ha).

Regarding the quality group, the rice varieties NH6, DQ11, DT39, X1 have higher yields than the control variety, the remaining varieties LTH134, Huong com 4, QR3, X1 have yields equivalent to or lower than the control variety HT1 (56 tons/ha). The rice varieties participating in the trial have good resistance to pests and external conditions, good growth and development ability.

Analyzing the outstanding advantages of the HN6 rice variety, Mr. Tran Hai, technical officer of TT-Hue Plant and Animal Seed Joint Stock Company, said: "Among the 16 varieties participating in the above testing, HN6 is a rice variety with a lot of potential, with an average yield of 55 - 60 quintals/ha, and with good intensive cultivation it can reach 65 - 70 quintals/ha.

The maturity period is 5-7 days shorter than HT1, the rice quality is delicious, and it can adapt to many different types of soil, especially low-lying areas. NH6 is a purebred rice variety created by Ha Nam Seed and Agricultural Services Joint Stock Company, and has been tested at Nam Vinh Seed Farm since the 2012 Summer-Summer crop.

At the recent workshop to evaluate the results of testing new rice varieties in the 2013 winter-spring crop, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Thua Thien Hue requested the provincial Plant and Animal Seed Joint Stock Company to continue to arrange basic testing of 9 rice varieties in the 2013-2014 winter-spring crop, including the following varieties: X10, H229, DDT136, T65 (in the yield group), HN6, DQ11, DT39, Huong com 4, X1 (in the quality group). At the same time, conduct trial production of some varieties on different soils in the coming crop seasons.

The annual research and testing of promising new rice varieties by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Thua Thien Hue Province, together with the Plant and Animal Seed Joint Stock Company and the Center for Agricultural, Forestry and Fishery Extension, is of great significance from the actual production needs in order to gradually replace poor quality varieties and meet the increasing demand for rice quality.
