According to the initial survey results of the Food and Agricultural Products Quality Development and Control Project (FAPQDC) on “consumer awareness and shopping behavior for safe food and agricultural products”, 99% of consumers choose to buy food at traditional markets, with the reasons being close to home, saving time and affordable prices.

Most consumers have the habit of buying food at the market.

The above data was presented at the workshop "Summary and dissemination of pilot models of agricultural and food production and business chains according to VietGAP/GMPs", organized by the National Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Quality Management (NAFIQAD), FAPQDC in coordination with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Lam Dong, on September 19, in Da Lat City (Lam Dong).

According to the same source, the trend of shopping at supermarkets has also become popular (68%), mainly in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi; about 10% of consumers choose to buy food at Metro and convenience stores. However, when buying safe products, consumers trust supermarkets more than traditional markets and rate food safety in Vietnam above average.

According to the survey, consumers' intention to buy safe food has a very high score if the product is confirmed by the VietGAP logo and the supermarket brand. Customers accept to buy products with a brand and origin at a price 10-15% higher than the average price on the market.

The FAPQDC project is funded by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), with the aim of improving the quality, food safety and market access of agricultural and food products in Vietnam.

After six years of implementation, 20 pilot models of safe agricultural and food production and business chains (vegetables, fruits, pork, chicken) in eight provinces and cities have been built, operated, verified and are being replicated.
