Claiming that they had built up a fortune of tens of billions of dong together but were left penniless after the divorce, the old man was said to have "been so frustrated that he threw acid on his ex-wife and then locked the door and set himself on fire."

On the afternoon of October 21, Go Vap District Police, Ho Chi Minh City, worked with relevant people to investigate the case of Mr. Vuong Chi Linh (67 years old) who used acid on his ex-wife and then locked himself in a 3-story house in Ward 7.

Based on initial findings, the investigation agency believes that the reason Mr. Linh committed the crime against his ex-wife was due to a conflict over property division after the divorce.

Mr. Linh and Mrs. Nguyen Thi Tuong Van (65 years old) got married more than 10 years ago, after he had been married before. During their time together, they had amassed a fortune of tens of billions of dong.

In 2010, the couple had a conflict and filed for divorce. Determining the ownership of the property that Mr. Linh had signed to his wife in 2007, and all the documents under Ms. Van's name were legal, when the divorce was decided, the court transferred all the property to the wife.

Not accepting this verdict, Mr. Linh appealed, claiming that his wife had “conspired to seize the family property” in the past. However, Mr. Linh still lost the next trial because the appeal court upheld the decision of the first instance court.

In early October, the three-story house in Ward 7 where he and his wife used to live was forcibly taken over by the enforcement agency, forcing Mr. Linh to hand it over to his wife. With nowhere else to go, Mr. Linh applied for a few more days of shelter to take care of some matters.

On the morning of October 21, after preparing a bottle of acid and two cans of gasoline, Mr. Linh called his ex-wife to come over to give him the house papers. As soon as Ms. Van arrived on her motorbike, Mr. Linh ran out of a nearby coffee shop and threw the chemical can straight at his ex-wife. While Ms. Van was writhing and screaming for help, Mr. Linh went home, poured gasoline on himself, and set himself on fire.

Detecting smoke billowing from the 3-story house, the police sent a fire truck to the scene. When people broke down the door, they discovered Mr. Linh dead in the bathroom. Outside, there was a set of house papers that had been left in advance.

Ms. Van is being treated for serious injuries.
