(Baonghean) - In 2012, Quynh Thuan commune, Quynh Luu district boldly experimented with planting 14.5 hectares of sugarcane in some barren, difficult-to-cultivate areas of Tan Xuan village. This model has brought about encouraging results, contributing to improving agricultural land and improving people's income. Currently, Quynh Thuan commune is implementing policies to encourage people to expand the area of sugarcane cultivation...

The family of Mr. To Duy Dai in Tan Xuan hamlet, Quynh Thuan commune, Quynh Luu district is one of the pioneers in implementing the model of growing sugarcane on fallow land. In 2012, with the support of the People's Committee of Quynh Luu district and Song Con Sugarcane Factory (Tan Ky), he and 120 households in Tan Xuan village boldly started to grow sugarcane on a trial basis on a total area of 14.5 hectares. After the first sugarcane harvest with the joy of a good harvest and good price, he and the villagers are now very excited. Mr. To Duy Dai - Head of Tan Xuan village, said: "Quynh Thuan commune has 3 agricultural villages, up to now Tan Xuan village has eliminated fallow fields. In the coming time, we will try to eliminate all fallow areas and expand the sugarcane growing area."

Sharing the same joy, currently, Ms. Nguyen Thi Luong's family is actively taking care of their sugarcane area. Previously, with this area, she often planted peanuts and corn, but the economic efficiency was not high. There were crops that she had to leave fallow, weeds grew everywhere. Implementing the commune's policy on experimental planting of sugarcane, she converted 7 sao of her family's land to grow sugarcane. After the first successful harvest, her family earned over 15 million VND, 3-4 times more than growing peanuts. Currently, she encourages other households to implement this model.

The sugarcane growing model in Quynh Thuan commune belongs to the National Target Program for New Rural Development and is supported by Quynh Luu district with a budget of 50 million VND. Song Con Sugarcane Factory sent technicians to the site to guide and train the people. In addition, the factory also supported 100% of the land plowing cost with an amount of 300,000 VND/sao. Right from the first harvest, the factory sent trucks to the fields to buy for the people. After deducting all costs of fertilizer, seeds, and labor, each sao of sugarcane growing people also earned a profit of nearly 3 million VND.

Along with that, the factory will consume all the products so people do not need to worry about the output. Based on the initial success, Quynh Thuan commune will expand the sugarcane growing area to 25 hectares in other villages. Mr. Tran Quoc Tuan - Chairman of Quynh Thuan Commune People's Committee, said: "Compared to some other crops on local land, sugarcane has higher income and less care and fertilization. The locality's plan is to continue to expand to 2 other villages with an area of 25 hectares to gradually eliminate the fallow land area, bringing economic efficiency to the people".

Sugarcane in Quynh Thuan not only contributes to improving barren land with low productivity and economic efficiency, but also opens a new direction to help local people escape poverty sustainably. However, to expand the area of sustainable sugarcane cultivation, it is necessary to pay attention to the issue of reasonable credit support for farmers.
