The work "Countryside Story" by Ku Cao Khai, Ninh Binh (one of two works winning Second Prize) |
In particular, the young generation of sculptors has surprised with their creative works that still combine tradition and modernity, national identity and globalization. Young sculptors are also concerned with the fading traditional values. Many works seem to preserve those values for tomorrow, as shown in: “Countryside Stories” by Ku Cao Khai, “Bringing a Wife by a Farmer’s Truck” by Pham Thai Binh, “Peace on the Island” by Tran Viet Ha, “Origins” by Nguyen Van Chuoc, etc.
Many works reflect modern urban life such as: the work "The Shell" by Tran Van An made of dark welded iron in a box shape, tightly bound and hardened, creating a heavy, cramped feeling of urban space and architecture. The work "The Numbered Bus Route" by Hoang Van Thang is an image of a group of people rushing to catch the bus on time. The work "Street Corner" by Do The Thinh is dirty with the fate of homeless people and "The Eyes" by Nguyen Van Huy is imbued with the sadness of beggar children. The sculpture - installation "The Birds" by Thai Nhat Minh made of bamboo and wood depicts cute and lovely birds in a narrow window, expressing the desire to escape, to fly, the dream of freedom and peace, which is also the psychology of today's youth.

"Seesaw" by Nguyen Thanh Binh, Da Nang |
The authors have made many efforts to explore with the diversity of materials used: bronze, stone, wood, steel and synthetic materials; however, sculptures made of metal materials such as iron and steel have stagnated, following the beaten path. Regarding reliefs, there are not really typical works, lacking monumental works - an important form of sculpture.
According to Mr. Vi Kien Thanh, Director of the Department of Fine Arts, Photography and Exhibitions (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism) - Head of the Exhibition Organizing Committee, "The 5th National Exhibition of 10 Years of Sculpture" (2003 - 2013) is an event of the Vietnamese Fine Arts community to summarize, evaluate and introduce the achievements in the creation and development of Vietnamese sculpture over the past 10 years, and at the same time recognize the contributions of the next generations of the Vietnamese sculpture industry.
The exhibition shows a generation of sculptors who are maturing and full of promise with new creative thinking, combining tradition and modernity, national identity and globalization trends.
