The never-ending crisis at MU: Sir Alex still defends Moyes.

It's been quite a while since Sir Alex Ferguson spoke about his former club, Manchester United. This time, the Old Trafford legend once again defended David Moyes, the man he personally chose to take the hot seat, and the one who is destroying the achievements he built...

Despite Manchester United's string of defeats, manager David Moyes still received support from Sir Alex.

"MOYES NEEDS MORE TIME"

Sir Alex Ferguson wasn't in England last weekend. Instead, he was in Los Angeles to attend the 2014 Academy Awards. However, in a press interview, Sir Alex still took the time to talk about Manchester United. He once again defended David Moyes: “I’ve been at Old Trafford for 27 years. So much has changed over time. So, with a new manager, they need more time. It’s still too early to conclude anything. David Moyes needs more time to prove himself. After that, I think things will be fine for MU again.”

Sir Alex's defense of Moyes is understandable, as he was the one who advised Manchester United to choose Moyes as his replacement. However, more and more fans are questioning Sir Alex's choice. In fact, after Manchester United's 0-2 defeat to Olympiakos in the Champions League last week, 70% of The Times readers believe it's time for Moyes to leave.

But Manchester United are known for their patience with managers. For example, in 1974, Tommy Docherty was not sacked despite the Red Devils being relegated to the Second Division (equivalent to the Championship now). However, that doesn't mean Moyes can trifle with MU's patience and the opportunities they've given him. The Daily Mail commented: "MU's current style of play is quite similar to Liverpool's under Roy Hodgson in 2010." Hodgson, however, left in early 2011. So what awaits Moyes, despite still having Sir Alex's backing?

IT'S TIME FOR THE GLAZER FAMILY TO SPEAK UP

While Manchester United is mired in crisis, the English press continues to report that Moyes will remain in his position at least until Christmas. Or, more recently, that the Red Devils' board will base their decision on Moyes' performance from now until the end of the season before deciding whether to continue giving him the £200 million he needs for transfers. However, all of this information remains unconfirmed. To date, the Glazer family has not made any official statement regarding Moyes' future.

Indeed, when plunged into crisis, the Red Devils' management only talked about their packed summer tour plans from Asia to America to recoup the financial losses from their (most likely) Champions League absence. They rarely spoke directly about Moyes' future. CEO Ed Woodward is a renowned businessman and economist, having brought in a series of new partners for MU such as Beeline Vietnam, Bharti Airtel Limited, Du, Globacom, Hutchinson 3… But he is quite different from his predecessor David Gill; he hasn't stood by Moyes when needed, as Gill did with Sir Alex before. With Ed Woodward, it feels like MU is being transformed into a club heavily reliant on commerce. As writer Martin Samuel put it: "The Glazers and Ed Woodward must realize they are not the true stars of MU."

In short, Moyes needed stronger assurances not only from Sir Alex, but also from the top brass at Old Trafford.
