This defeat almost eliminated Tottenham's chances of advancing, meaning England faces the risk of not having any representatives in the quarter-finals of European tournaments this season.

In the Champions League, Man City and Arsenal were eliminated, while Manchester United lost 0-2 to Olympiakos in the first leg of the knockout round. Chelsea were the most likely team but could only manage a 1-1 draw against Galatasaray.

In the early morning match, Sevilla also disappointed fans when they lost to the team at risk of relegation, Betis, who defeated them 2-0 at home after the Spanish "civil war" in the Europa League.

In contrast to Tottenham and Sevilla, Lyon asserted their home advantage with a 4-1 win over Viktoria Plzen, to put one foot in the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, Serie A is facing the risk of having only 1 representative in the quarter-finals, after Napoli lost 0-1 to Porto. In the "civil war" of Italy, Juventus and Fiorentina drew 1-1.
