Besides its nutritional and refreshing value, watermelon is also a valuable medicine that can cure many ailments.

During hot summer days, watermelon is a delicious fruit, a valuable thirst quencher, with a sweet, cool taste and a light aroma; eating it helps quench thirst and improve health.

In ancient medical texts, watermelon was used as a remedy for sunstroke, heatstroke, thirst, discomfort, dysentery, diarrhea, fever, and headaches. In folk medicine, both the flesh and rind of the watermelon are used as remedies.

Here are some common remedies using watermelon.

- To treat colds, fever, headache, dizziness, and excessive sweating: Take 20g of watermelon rind, 20g of honeysuckle flowers, and 10g of bamboo leaves, decoct with 500ml of water until only 300ml remains, and divide into 3 doses to drink throughout the day.

- To treat diarrhea: Take 20g of dried watermelon rind, boil it with 500ml of water until only 250ml remains, and divide it into 3 doses to drink throughout the day.

- To treat heatstroke, sunstroke, dry tongue, excessive thirst, or delirium and rambling speech: Choose a good, large watermelon, cut it open, and squeeze out the juice for the patient to drink slowly, in small amounts.

- Treatment for diabetes: Take 30g each of watermelon rind and green squash rind, boil them in water, and drink the resulting decoction three times a day as described above.

Studies on its chemical composition show that 100g of watermelon contains 95.5% water, 1.2% protein, 2.5% carbohydrates, 0.5% cellulose, minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, and iron, and vitamins B1, B2, PP, C, and carotenoids. Importantly, watermelon is also rich in folic acid, one of the essential elements in the blood formation process. Eating just 200g of watermelon is enough to meet the daily folic acid requirement.
