Fiber helps heart patients live longer.

Eating plenty of fiber-rich foods daily may improve the long-term chances of recovery for people who have had a heart attack.

The research team analyzed data from two surveys on daily dietary habits involving 4,000 men and women who had survived their first heart attack. Over a nine-year period, 682 female and 451 male patients died.

A study by American scientists at Harvard School of Public Health, recently published in the British Medical Journal, shows that patients could live for more than nine years if they maintain a daily diet rich in fiber.

People who consumed more fiber had a 25% lower risk of dying from various causes over that period compared to those who consumed less fiber, and a 13% lower risk of having a fatal heart attack.

American experts recommend consuming an average of 38g of fiber per day, which is found in many fruits, vegetables, and grains.
