A legend has passed away. Yesterday, the striker considered the best of all time in world football breathed his last at Gregorio Maranon Hospital in Madrid. Alfredo Di Stefano passed away just 3 days after his 88th birthday, leaving behind endless sorrow for football lovers all over the planet.
The striker who was once praised by the King of Football Pele and the legend Eusebio as “the most complete player in the history of football” has passed away. He could not overcome a stroke on his 88th birthday.
On the official website, Real Madrid announced: "It is with great sadness that we announce that the club's honorary president Alfredo Di Stefano has passed away at 5:15 p.m..." But surely not only Real Madrid fans, but the whole world will feel disappointed by the passing of the player known as the "Silver Arrow".
Di Stefano is a part of Real Madrid's history. He made great contributions to help the Royal team win 8 La Liga championships, 1 King's Cup, 1 Intercontinental Cup and especially 5 consecutive C1 Cup championships in the 50s of the last century and won the European Golden Ball twice. Because of his great contributions at Bernabeu, he was elected honorary president of Real Madrid until his last breath.
It can be affirmed that Di Stefano's life and illustrious career are a series of strange contradictions.
Di Stefano signed for Barcelona, but before he could play a single game at the Nou Camp, he moved to Real Madrid, turning the two teams into bitter enemies. He was born in Argentina, played for the national team, but then had a stepping stone to play for Colombia, before officially joining Spain.
He never played in the World Cup, but was always recognized as the best striker in the world of all time. Di Stefano did not play in the World Cup as a matter of fate. Because in 1962, the "Silver Arrow" made a great contribution to Spain's ticket to the World Cup. However, a serious thigh injury shattered his dream of participating in the biggest stage of world football. That was also the shock that made him decide to retire from international football.
Di Stefano left with an unfulfilled wish. He no longer had the chance to fulfill his dream of going to Brazil to watch Argentina play, in case his hometown team won the right to play in the final of this year's World Cup. Thus, the last time this football legend appeared at a major event was at the FIFA Ballon d'Or voting ceremony in 2013.
