New condoms with Viva Gel lubricant have the ability to kill HIV virus. |
Specifically, the main ingredient in Viva Gel is Astodrimer Sodium (0.5%). This is an antibiotic specially formulated as an anti-HIV compound.
Clinical evidence has shown that VivaGel condoms are effective in inactivating up to 99.9% of HIV, genital warts and human papillomaviruses.
The product has received an assessment certificate from the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration – similar to the CE mark in Europe, allowing mass production and consumer application.
In addition, Australian Biotechnology company Starpharma also cooperates with Ansell to ensure the product will be distributed and capture 70% of the Australian condom market.
It is known that the rate of newly diagnosed HIV infections in Australia increased by 10% in the 12 months to the end of 2012. This is considered the largest increase in Australia in the past 20 years.
Faced with this situation, Ansell Chairman and General Director of the global sexual health business unit Peter Carroll hopes to soon bring to consumers a "breakthrough product" in protecting sexual health.
