Gleditsia sinensis, also known as Gleditsia acacia, grows wild and is cultivated throughout Vietnam. The parts used are the fruit (called Gleditsia acacia), the thorns (called Gleditsia acacia thorns), and the seeds (called Gleditsia acacia seeds). The fruit contains 10% yellow saponin, gleditsia BG saponin, and australozit saponin, along with five flavonoids: inteolin, saponaretin, vitestin, homorientin, and orientin. These five substances have antiviral activity, and sapogenin kills trichomoniasis. The thorns contain gleditsia saponin BG and palmitic acid. The fruit has a pungent, salty taste, is warm in nature, slightly toxic, clears nasal passages, expels phlegm, reduces swelling, and induces sneezing.
