Strange plant hybrids

TomTato produces cherry tomatoes and white potatoes simultaneously, while Shasta daisies have larger petals and a longer blooming period thanks to hybridization or grafting techniques.

1. Tomato-potato hybrid

The plant, called TomTato, yields 500 cherry tomatoes and numerous white potatoes simultaneously. TomTato looks like a normal tomato plant. However, when the plant is pulled out of the ground, white potatoes can be seen growing from its roots. This is not a genetically modified plant, but rather one created through grafting.

2. Plum-apricot hybrid

Plumcot is a hybrid fruit, a cross between a Japanese plum and a regular apricot tree. It has a plum-like flesh and an apricot-like aroma. Previously, no one thought it was possible to crossbreed these two types of trees.

3. White raspberries

White raspberries are created by crossbreeding a brown raspberry called Crystal White with a Lawton raspberry. Normally, raspberries are red or black.

4. Shasta Daisy

Shasta daisies have white flowers with large petals and bloom longer than regular daisies. The plants are cultivated by cross-pollinating white daisies with English daisies. The best plants are selected and crossbred with Portuguese daisies. This crossbreeding process takes about six years, but the petals are not white enough. Crossbreeding continues with Japanese daisies. Shasta daisies were introduced in 1901, after 17 years of research.

5. Spineless cacti

Spinless cacti require careful care, regular watering, and do not tolerate cold. This type of cactus cannot survive in the desert.
