In fact, acne products containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, which are sold over the counter, can cause allergic reactions that, although rare, are very serious and potentially life-threatening.

From 1969-2013, approximately 130 serious reactions associated with these products were reported to the FDA, the highest since 2012.

The FDA requires providers to warn patients using the drug about symptoms of a serious skin reaction or signs of anaphylaxis that require immediate medical attention, such as: feeling of tightness in the throat; difficulty breathing; blurred vision or swelling of the eyes, face, lips, tongue...; low blood pressure and fainting.

Additionally, in a milder form of reaction, topical acne products cause facial redness, burning, dryness, itching, flaking, or swelling. Hypersensitivity reactions can occur within minutes to a day or more after using the product.

When using a topical product for the first time to treat acne, we should test a small amount of the medication on one or two areas that may only be slightly affected and monitor for 72 hours to ensure that no hypersensitivity reactions occur.
