Foods that are good but dangerous if eaten too much

They are nutritious foods but eating too much is not good for your health. You don't have to give them up, just eat them in moderation.

Oranges and tomatoes

Don't overdo it on these two delicious but highly acidic fruits, advises Gina Sam, MD, director of the Mount Sinai Gastrointestinal Motility Center at Mount Sinai Hospital. The increased acidity from eating too many oranges or tomatoes can lead to reflux.

Eating too many oranges and tomatoes over a long period of time can cause Barrett’s esophagus, a disorder in which precancerous lesions form on the lining of the esophagus. Dr. Sam suggests eating no more than two small oranges or tomatoes a day. Avoid these foods altogether if you already have reflux symptoms.

Canned tuna

Canned tuna can be a very appealing food. However, eating too much canned tuna can be dangerous, as tuna is often higher in mercury than other fish.

Too much mercury can lead to vision problems, hearing and speech problems, poor coordination, and muscle weakness. You shouldn’t eat more than three to five cans of tuna a week, says Sam. You can also choose fish that are lower in mercury, such as salmon, shrimp, and cod.

Water

Adequate hydration is key to good health, but drinking too much water can cause water intoxication, says Alan R. Gaby, MD, author of the textbook Medical Nutrition. This occurs when water intake dilutes the sodium in the body, leading to abnormally low blood sodium levels, which can lead to impaired brain function and even death.

How much water is a problem? This is usually only a problem for marathon runners or people who force themselves to drink too much. However, you should not drink too much water, check your urine, if it is always clear, reduce your water intake.

Soybeans

Soybeans can help control cholesterol and blood pressure when consumed in moderation. If consumed in excess, soybeans will inhibit iron absorption, causing anemia. Long-term consumption of large amounts of soybeans can cause endometrial hyperplasia, an increase in the lining of the uterus that can lead to uterine cancer. While there is no exact information on the safe level of soybeans, you can eat 2 cups of soy milk or less.

Spinach

Fresh and delicious, spinach is packed with protein, fiber, and various vitamins and minerals. Spinach is also rich in lutein, a carotenoid that may help prevent age-related macular degeneration (a common cause of vision loss and blindness), says Gaby.

Spinach also contains high levels of oxalate, a compound that can lead to the formation of kidney stones. Therefore, kidney stone patients should not eat too much of this vegetable.

Low fat animal protein

If you mostly consume lean proteins like chicken breast or egg whites, it’s time to switch. Fuhrman says that consuming too much lean animal protein can be dangerous because it causes the body to increase production of the hormone insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), which promotes aging and increases the risk of cancer (especially breast cancer).

In fact, a study published in the journal Cell Metabolism found a fourfold increase in cancer deaths and a 75% increase in deaths among people who consumed at least 20% of their calories from lean animal protein. Instead, you should consume more plant-based proteins, such as beans, nuts, and whole grains, says Fuhrman.
