The Nobel Committee stated: This year's laureates have discovered a navigation system (a kind of intrinsic GPS) in the brain that allows humans to orient themselves in space.

The research by the three scientists focuses on explaining the questions "how the brain forms a map of the space around us, and how we can navigate in a complex environment."

The discovery of the brain's navigation system has opened new avenues for understanding other cognitive processes, such as memory, thinking, and planning.

John O'Keefe, an American scientist of British descent, received this prestigious award along with the Norwegian couple, Evard I. Moser and May-Britt Moser.
