This is the latest step to consolidate China's illegal control over a large area of the East Sea, after unilaterally establishing the so-called "Sansha City", illegally managing Vietnam's Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagos in June 2012.

Xinhua did not give details about the runway, but said it was 2,000 meters long and hinted that “the runway will serve military purposes.”

In addition, the Chinese state news agency brazenly commented: “With the completion and continued renovation of the runways on Yongxing Island (the Chinese name for Phu Lam Island, part of Vietnam's Hoang Sa archipelago - PV), military aircraft can be deployed in the Hoang Sa archipelago, significantly improving China's defense capabilities in the Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagos.”

Through the posted images, it can be seen that the airport is surrounded by construction cranes, showing that the project has either just been completed or is still under construction.

Since establishing the so-called “Sansha City” and placing the headquarters of this illegal administrative unit on Phu Lam Island, China has carried out a series of illegal renovations and infrastructure constructions on islands and reefs in Vietnam’s Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagos. In addition, Beijing has also made great efforts to consolidate and perfect the administrative system, serving illegal residents here such as establishing schools, building hospitals, building seawater treatment plants, etc. In addition, China has also intensified its propaganda campaign and expanded tourism, in an attempt to legitimize “Sansha” and carry out its plot to monopolize the East Sea.

According to Xinhua, the so-called “Sansha City” also has a military station and is establishing a patrol system to help protect “national sovereignty.”

All of these actions by Beijing have seriously violated Vietnam's sovereignty, sovereign rights and jurisdiction over the Hoang Sa archipelago and further complicated the situation in the East Sea.
