Researchers call the ancient book a "powerful handbook of rituals." According to Live Science, it reveals many spells, how to use love magic, ward off evil spirits and cure jaundice.

The book is about 1,300 years old, written in the ancient Coptic language. All 20 pages are made of parchment.

"The ancient book includes many spells with drawings, some rules or charms for spiritual healing, bringing success in love and business," said Professor Malcolm Choat of Macquarie University and Iain Gardner of the University of Sydney, Australia.

The book deals with the saint Baktiotha, a mysterious being with great power and who rules over the forces of the material world. The writing style of the book suggests that it is from Upper Egypt. During the time of its writing, many Egyptians were Christians.

The identity of the book's users and its provenance remain a mystery. In 1981, experts at Macquarie University purchased the book from antique dealer Michael Fackelmann in Vienna, Austria. However, the reason Michael Fackelmann acquired the book is still unclear.
