8 Foods That Give You Headaches

It's not just work and life pressure that causes you headaches. Maybe you don't know, the food you eat every day is also one of the reasons that makes you face those annoying pains.

1. Coffee

Coffee can cause headaches if you use it too much and regularly for a long time. Coffee has a stimulating effect on the nervous system, causing stress and anxiety, leading to muscle tension, which can cause headaches. Coffee also reduces blood flow to the brain.

2. Beer

Beer is dehydrating and provides carbon dioxide, which can give you a headache. Draft beer contains tyramine, one of the chemicals linked to headaches.

3. Food

Food made from foods that are not fresh can be the cause of your headaches. Tyramine levels increase when food is stored for a long time or is not fresh. So be careful when using leftovers and choose ingredients when cooking.

4. Dehydration

Your body needs water to function properly. Lack of water can cause headaches. On average, women need 8 glasses of water a day and men need 10 glasses of water a day.

5. Fermented foods

Pickles, soy sauce, sauces and other fermented foods are popular foods, but they can be the main cause of your headaches.

6. Chocolate

Recent research presented at the International Headache Society found that cocoa may actually protect the nerve cells that cause migraines. But 22% of headache sufferers said chocolate was one of the triggers.

Many migraine sufferers experience increased appetite and chocolate cravings right before their headache begins.

So, your craving for chocolate is not the cause of your headache, but a sign that you are about to have a headache.

7. Processed meat

There is no research to confirm that eating processed meat will give you headaches. But eating foods like hot dogs and cold cuts can make your headaches worse. That's because processed meats contain food preservatives called nitrates and nitrites. Not only do nitrates give you headaches, they can increase your risk of heart disease and diabetes.

8. Bananas

Bananas don't typically appear on lists of headache-causing foods, but they can trigger migraines in people sensitive to tyramine.

Research shows that banana peels have about 10 times more tyramine than banana pulp. There is no reliable research on this, but get rid of the fibrous bits stuck to your bananas if you don’t want a migraine.
