The protest, titled “Justice for All,” was organized at the initiative of Pastor Al Sharpton and brought together members of the families of Eric Garner and Akai Gurley (Black men killed by New York police), Tamir Rice (a 12-year-old Black boy killed by police who mistook a toy gun for a real one), Trayvon Martin (shot in 2012 in Florida), and Michael Brown (who was shot by a police officer in Ferguson).

Emmanuel Gonzales, a reporter for LeMonde in Washington who also joined the protest, said, “I’m from Stanen Island (New York), my friends and I are here to do something together, we can’t let this continue.” The protesters believe that “action is needed to combat the institutionalized racism in America. Action must continue. Police brutality is not a recent phenomenon; it has been going on for a long time. A solution is needed through dialogue between communities and institutions, and it’s time for the federal government to provide answers to all of this.”

Protesters marched on Pennsylvania Avenue, the street between the White House and the Capitol Building. According to organizers, many came from Florida, Connecticut, and even Pittsburgh. In New York, the “Millions March” also drew at least 25,000 participants. Throughout the country, protests were peaceful. On Friday, numerous horn-whistled demonstrations took place outside New York City police stations to protest police brutality.
