(Baonghean) - Tan Huong Block 1, 2 is the area where a large area of agarwood roots is planted in Quy Chau Town in 2014. At this time, households in the block are urgently and actively harvesting their family's agarwood roots products.

Mr. Le Hong Quan in Tan Huong 2 block said: This year his family planted 4 sao of incense roots, an increase of 2 sao compared to last year. Previously, sugarcane was grown on this area but the efficiency was low, so when the district had a policy of converting crops, he boldly planted incense roots. Due to suitable weather conditions and soil quality, incense roots grow and develop well, with a much higher yield than sugarcane, aromatic roots, and a lot of essential oils. Currently, his family has harvested half of the area, and he is planning to breed the remaining half for next year's production.

Quy Chau town has an agricultural land area of 233.5 hectares. Since 2012, the Porit project has supported the planting of 2.6 hectares of incense roots, bringing high economic efficiency, so the district has a policy to expand the planting area to the blocks in the town. Mr. Dau Cong Ha, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Quy Chau town, said: In 2014, the town has newly planted 3.3 hectares of incense roots, bringing the total area of incense roots to 10 hectares with 25 households participating. Concentrated in Tan Huong 1, Tan Huong 2, Hoa Hai blocks... Mainly converting ineffective sugarcane growing areas to growing incense roots to create local raw materials for the incense production industry in the area. The estimated yield is 40 quintals/ha (theoretically 37 quintals/ha). The selling price of incense roots is currently quite high at 15,000 VND/kg of fresh roots, 45,000 VND/kg of dried roots. According to the people who work in the incense industry, the incense roots grown in Quy Chau have a distinctive aroma compared to other regions. The town has conducted the first acceptance test (in April) and the second test after the harvest to accurately evaluate the effectiveness of growing incense roots, from which there is a mechanism to support people with 300,000 VND/1 sao/household.

Incense roots have been planted in Quy Chau since 2012, according to Decision No. 10 on agricultural and rural support policies issued by the District People's Committee. The purpose is to create a source of local raw materials to serve the incense-producing craft villages in the district (currently there are 4 craft villages, 3 villages with the craft). Over the years, the area of incense root planting has continuously increased: from 10 hectares (2010) to 57.5 hectares (2014), mainly expanding in the suburbs of the town such as Tan Huong 1, 2, Chau Tien, Chau Phong. Mr. Sam Van Thai, Head of the District Agricultural Extension Station, said: To encourage people to plant incense roots, the district has a mechanism to support 60% of the seed price; at the beginning of the production season, training courses on science and technology are opened to guide people on how to plant, care for, and prevent pests and diseases. Currently, to reduce the cost of buying seeds, the station is testing a model of growing rosewood seeds at Mr. Ho Viet Thang's household in Tan Huong 2 block. If successful, it will be able to self-supply seeds, significantly increasing income for the people.

Assessing the effectiveness of expanding the area of growing incense roots in Quy Chau, Mr. Lo Thanh Son, Head of the District's Agriculture Department, affirmed: "Growing incense roots on the one hand brings income to people per unit area, on the other hand, this is a new direction to develop the traditional incense production village of Quy Chau according to a closed model. In 2015, the district is expected to continue expanding the area of growing incense roots to many other localities such as Chau Binh, Chau Binh, Chau Hoi...".
