Two recent studies have demonstrated this effectiveness, even in people with high risk factors such as high cholesterol.
A large study of 70,000 women followed for 20 years found that six good habits could reduce the risk of heart disease by up to 92%: not smoking, keeping your body mass index (BMI) within normal limits, exercising at least two and a half hours a week, watching less than seven hours of TV a week, having a small glass of wine, and eating a healthy diet of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, fish, and limiting sugary drinks, red meat, and salt.
For men, a study of 20,000 people advised them to quit smoking, drink alcohol in moderation, exercise by walking or cycling for about 40 minutes a day, keep their waistline below 94cm and follow a healthy diet.
If you follow these five habits, you can reduce your risk of heart disease by 86%.
