Below is a list of herbs that are very familiar in your home, but are very effective in treating back pain.

Piper betel leaves

Betel leaves are famous for betel leaf patties, a dish that Vietnamese people love. However, besides being a food ingredient, betel leaves also have medicinal uses.

According to traditional medicine, betel leaves have analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. Therefore, they are often used to treat back pain and muscle aches.

Instructions: Combine betel leaves and mugwort leaves in a 1:1 ratio, then crush them, add vinegar, and heat the mixture. Apply as a compress twice a day. It is very effective in reducing pain.

Mugwort

Mugwort contains essential oils such as cineol, dehydro matricaria ester, tricosanol, and archly… all of which have the ability to treat nerve pain, rheumatism, etc.

Instructions: Wash mugwort leaves thoroughly, then stir-fry them with vinegar or roast them until hot. Spread a fresh banana leaf on the bed, then place the stir-fried mugwort on top. Lie on your back, resting your back on the mugwort. Alternatively, lie on your stomach and apply the hot mugwort to your lower back.

Note: Avoid prolonged or continuous use. It should not be used by people with yin deficiency, high blood pressure, or during pregnancy.

Chili peppers

According to traditional medicine, chili peppers are a Vietnamese remedy that can treat pain and ward off cold. Modern science has also shown that chili peppers contain capsicain, which stimulates the brain to release endorphins, capable of numbing and reducing pain. You can use chili leaves or chili peppers to treat back pain.

Instructions: Crush 15 ripe chili peppers, 3 papaya leaves, and 80g of chili pepper root, then soak them in alcohol at a 1:2 ratio. Use this mixture to massage the lower back whenever pain occurs.

Alternatively, take 50g of chili pepper leaves, wash them thoroughly, crush them, roast them until hot, then add a little alcohol, wrap it in a cloth bag and apply it to the painful area while the medicine is still hot. Change the medicine once a day. When the medicine cools down, you can roast it again 1-2 times.

Fresh ginger

The pungent compounds in fresh ginger have been shown to have antioxidant properties and provide immediate pain relief, especially for back pain.

Instructions: Heat 20g of fresh ginger, 15g of onion, and 30g of flour in a pan, then apply to the painful area.

Ginseng root
