Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has agreed to allow the Hanoi People's Committee to develop a plan for the establishment of a Department of Tourism and submit it to the Ministry of Interior for review and approval in coordination with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and other relevant ministries and agencies, in accordance with regulations, before submitting it to the Prime Minister.

As the capital and cultural and economic center of the country, Hanoi has great potential for tourism development. Its unique cultural features, vibrant street life, rich historical sites, the distinctive charm of Hanoi's Old Quarter, and the culinary traditions of the capital city all contribute to significant tourism growth.

Reportedly, in 2014, Hanoi's tourism industry attracted 18,500,000 visitors, including 3,000,000 international tourists and 15,500,000 domestic tourists, with total tourism revenue estimated at 48,000 billion VND.

Also in 2014, Hanoi received numerous accolades from leading Asian magazines such as TripAdvisor and Smart Travel Asia. According to TripAdvisor, Hanoi ranked 2nd out of 25 top destinations in Asia, 8th out of 25 top tourist destinations in the world in 2014, and the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology ranked 4th in the Top 25 museums in Asia... The establishment of the Department of Tourism will help Hanoi further exploit and develop this strength.

Previously, Ho Chi Minh City was the first locality in the country to separate the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism into two distinct departments: the Department of Tourism and the Department of Culture and Sports.
