(Baonghean) - Participating in the 2015 National High School Graduation Exam, besides students studying in grade 12 this year, there are also a number of independent candidates who failed the 2014 High School Graduation Exam or for some reason could not take the graduation exam in previous school years; there is another way to call these candidates "grade 13" students...

With many new points in the organization of the National High School Exam this year, independent candidates who want to do well on the exam, besides having to review, consolidate, and systematize the knowledge they have learned, must also update the missing knowledge after a long period of not going to school to study.

In order to create opportunities for these independent candidates to consolidate their knowledge, update the knowledge in the new curriculum textbooks, and confidently enter the exam, immediately after the Ministry of Education and Training officially announced the exam organization plan, a number of high schools "opened their doors" for these students to come to school to review and tutor. However, in reality, some difficulties and shortcomings have arisen, which need to be promptly overcome and lessons learned.

First of all, due to the characteristics of independent candidates, most of them have poor academic performance, when they have not graduated while they have completed the study program, they often have the mentality of "relaxing" or even giving up and getting bored. As a result, the knowledge gap becomes even more serious. When these students were put into the same class with grade 12 students in the form of "auditors" for nearly 3 months before the exam, many students could not absorb the amount of knowledge that had been lost. Therefore, studying is a formality. Many of these students go to class not to review and consolidate their knowledge but because of pressure from their families and to avoid the situation of "idle hands are the devil's workshop". In fact, in the past, some students who failed the graduation exam in previous school years have fallen, been drawn into social evils, and even violated the law.

In addition, the learning ability, sense of discipline and conduct of some "grade 13" students are still limited. When these students are placed in the same class with grade 12 students, it has more or less affected the order and discipline of the class and the school. Because they only register for certain subjects, there has been a situation where students are free and arbitrary in the order of going to class, creating disruptions in the organization of the classes, affecting the learning movement of the remaining students in the class. The management and handling of these "auditor" students also encountered many difficulties and was somewhat lax because these students were no longer official students of the school. Another problem is that many teachers are not very interested in teaching classes with "auditor" students. Since then, there has not been close attention to the psychology and ability to receive knowledge of these students. The inevitable consequence is that the compensation and updating of students' missing knowledge is insignificant.

In order to create the best conditions for independent candidates who need to review, consolidate and improve their knowledge in preparation for the upcoming exam, while not causing disruptions or affecting the teaching and learning of the school when admitting these independent candidates, there needs to be coordination and efforts from the school, family and each candidate.

First of all, students who wish to review and tutor must have an application form with the signature of their parents. School boards need to organize parent meetings for students who are independent candidates and do well in ideological work so that there can be close coordination in urging and managing students. Students who register for review need to have a commitment from themselves and their families to strictly follow school regulations, have a sense of discipline, and a good attitude towards studying. From there, schools need to have sanctions to deal with students who violate school regulations, affecting the teaching and learning order of the school. For schools with a large number of students registering to study, if conditions permit, these students can be placed in the same class to have specific and practical tutoring and review instructions. There needs to be a separate review program for these students. At the same time, assign competent and dedicated teachers to take charge.

Creating conditions for independent candidates to review and supplement their knowledge to continue taking the National High School Exam this year is a flexible, reasonable and appropriate policy of the Education sector. However, in order for this policy to be effective and have a positive impact, it requires more efforts from each student and close coordination between family and school.
