Professor Paul Spagnuolo of the University of Waterloo discovered that a type of lipid in avocados may help fight acute myeloid leukemia (AML) by targeting the root cause of the disease, namely leukemia stem cells.

During their research, experts developed a drug from a compound found in avocados called avocatin B that can attack acute myeloid leukemia at its root.

After numerous experiments, the research team found that avocatin B targets and destroys stem cells that cause AML without harming healthy cells.

AML is a form of acute leukemia that has been shown to be fatal within 5 years for 90% of people over the age of 65.

According to ANI news agency, there are currently very few treatments available worldwide that directly target leukemia stem cells. This research was published in the journal Cancer Research.
