In 1991, Mr. Ho Khanh (in Phong Nha village, Son Trach commune, Bo Trach district, Quang Binh) on a trip to find agarwood in the World Natural Heritage forest of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park encountered a strange cave. When he approached, he clearly felt a cool breeze blowing out of the cave, the sound of the wind whistling through the cliff was chilling.

In 2006, when Mr. Howard Limbert and his wife heard the above information, they went to Mr. Ho Khanh to learn about this "strange" cave. In early 2008, after many days of climbing the forest, crossing the river, climbing steep cliffs to explore, Mr. Ho Khanh and Mr. Howard Limbert discovered Son Doong Cave - the largest cave in the world.
