A recent study on the relationship between salt intake and body mass index, waist circumference and especially body fat mass, shows that eating too much salt leads to obesity. The reason is that salt makes people thirsty, making people want to consume more sugary drinks. In addition, salt is abundant in processed foods that are high in calories.

Graham MacGregor, who led the research at Queen Mary, University of London, called on governments and the food industry to tackle people's salt intake. "The food we eat is the biggest contributor to ill health," he said.

Victoria Taylor of the British Heart Foundation said: "Most of the salt we consume is already in ready-to-eat foods, which is why checking the nutrition information on packaging is essential to ensure we are making healthy choices and limiting the amount of salt we are eating."

This new study was published in the Journal of the American Heart Association.
