(Baonghean) - With a small natural area, little production land, and a large population, along with the introduction of sugarcane into production, people in village 2/9, Chau Khe commune (Con Cuong) have boldly grown chili peppers for commercial purposes. Through actual production, chili peppers bring a good income to many families.

In 1961, implementing the Party's policy, more than 200 outstanding young people from Nam Dan district volunteered to build a new economic zone in the sunny and windy land of Con Cuong. The day the first young people set foot on this land was the country's National Day, so people named the village September 2nd or "Nam Dan village" (Chau Khe, Con Cuong). The village has a natural area of 194 hectares, 135 households, and 580 people.

Mr. Tran Van Hung, Head of Village 2/9, said: Previously, the income of the villagers mainly depended on rice, peanut, corn production and forest planting (trees). But the production area is small, so the people's lives are difficult, some families have to earn a living from meal to meal during the lean season. In 2010, grasping the market demand, the villagers gradually started to switch to growing sugarcane. At first, the price of sugarcane was relatively high, so the lives of the villagers were improved, but in recent years, the price of sugarcane has been low and unstable, after deducting expenses, the income from sugarcane is not much anymore.

In early 2015, implementing the policy of Con Cuong district in converting crops and livestock, village 2/9 and Met, Tan Hop, Hua Na (Luc Da commune) were selected to test planting chili pepper for export. When first deployed, there were many difficulties, the initial care required strict, people were still skeptical about the effectiveness of chili pepper in terms of product output after harvest... Therefore, in the first season, the whole village only planted nearly 2 hectares. The household that planted the most was Mr. Nguyen Hong Phong's household with 900 m2, Mr. Tran Van Hung is 700 m2, while other households grow on very small areas. When the chili plants have taken root in this land, people like Mr. Phong and Mr. Hung wait anxiously. The land does not fail the people, the chili plants are greener and greener, giving more fruit.

Coming to village 2/9 when the chili crop is in full swing, the red ripe chilis are harvested and sold to traders. When asked about the price of chili on the market and the effectiveness of chili plants, Mr. Tran Van Hung excitedly said: 1 kg of chili at peak time is sold for 15-17 thousand VND. After deducting costs, one sao of chili makes a profit of more than 8 million VND, higher than growing other types of plants. Seeing the high economic efficiency of chili cultivation, the villagers are discussing to plant chili plants on a large scale next season. Mr. Nguyen Khac Sy, Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Con Cuong district, added: Growing chili is a pilot model of the district to change the structure of crops and livestock in the district. After the first crop, chili plants have high economic efficiency compared to other types of plants. The district is researching to plant chili plants on a large scale in areas with favorable conditions and linking to ensure output to contribute to increasing income for the people.
