Famous movies filmed in Vietnam

Vietnam, with its rich nature and beautiful scenery, has always been the target of Hollywood studios for decades.

On February 18, 2016, the Hollywood film crew Kong: Skull Island with hundreds of people and 45 tons of equipment arrived in Hanoi, starting a months-long filming process in Quang Binh, Ninh Binh and Quang Ninh.

In the past, war was the factor that brought foreign film crews to Vietnam. But today, the majestic and diverse natural landscape is the attraction, turning Vietnam into a new destination for foreign filmmakers.

At a press conference held in Hanoi on the morning of February 21, director John Vogt-Roberts said: "Audiences who watched Jurassic Park will know it's Hawaii, and those who watched Lord of the Rings will know it's New Zealand. Kong: Skull island will definitely bring new things, making many audiences ask: 'Where is this?', because Vietnam is so beautiful. I want to break the prejudices of American audiences about your country, because Vietnam is often depicted on screen through settings in the South. Kong: Skull island also has scenes filmed in the North."

While waiting to see a beautiful Vietnam in Kong: Skull Island, let's take a look at foreign films that also chose Vietnam as the setting:

Pan (2015)

Just last year, Pan directed by Joe Wright was a "hot" keyword with Vietnamese audiences. Not only did it gather a "magnificent" cast with names like Hugh Jackman, Amanda Seyfried, Rooney Mara, Cara Delevingne, the film aroused curiosity because in 2014, the production crew set foot in Son Doong Cave (Quang Binh Province), Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh Province to film some scenes.

However, unlike Kong: Skull island which was actually filmed in Vietnam, the actors in Pan performed in a studio with a green screen, and then the scenes filmed in Vietnam were inserted.

The Chinese Botanist's Daughters (2006)

Directed by Chinese-French director Dai Si Jie, The Two Daughters of a Medicinal Garden Owner revolves around the homosexual love affair between the two daughters - the biological daughter and daughter-in-law - of the medicinal garden owner.

Taking on the two main roles of the film are Ly Tieu Nhiem and Mylene Jampanoi.

Released in 2006, The Two Daughters of a Medicinal Garden Owner won many awards at the Montreal and Toronto World Film Festivals and is considered one of the best gay-themed films ever.

The sensitive content caused the film to be banned from filming in China, forcing director Dai Si Jie to film the entire film in Vietnam - where there are certain similarities in scenery.

Tam Coc - Bich Dong is the main setting of the film. The beautiful landscape and the majestic mountains of Ninh Binh contributed to the poetic quality of the tragic love story between An and Ming. In addition to Ninh Binh, the film was also filmed in Sapa and Ha Tay.

The Quiet American (The Quiet American - 2002)

Adapted from the famous novel of the same name by British writer Graham Greene, the film is a story revolving around the love triangle between Thomas Flowler, Pyle and Phuong, set against the backdrop of the Indochina War in its final stages.

The film was shot across the S-shaped strip of land, from Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Hoi An, Da Nang to Saigon. Director Dang Nhat Minh once commented that The Quiet American had wonderful scenes of Hanoi and Hoi An.

The film features many Vietnamese actors such as Do Hai Yen, Ngo Quang Hai, Cong Ly, Mai Hoa, singer Hong Nhung,...

Indochina (Indochine - 1992)

Set in the 1930s, the film tells the story of Eliane Devries, a French rubber plantation owner, during her days in Vietnam. Devries has an adopted Vietnamese daughter. The lives of the two women are completely changed when they both fall in love with naval officer Jean-Baptiste.

Indochina stars the legendary actress Catherine Deneuve. This is also the first film of French-Vietnamese actress Pham Linh Dan. Later, she returned to Vietnam and appeared in the film Choi Voi directed by Bui Thac Chuyen.

In addition, the film also features two veteran faces of Vietnamese cinema, Trinh Thinh and Nhu Quynh.

Indochina has some scenes filmed in Ha Long Bay, Thai Hoa Palace in Hue Citadel, Tu Duc Tomb (Hue), Tam Coc - Bich Dong in Ninh Binh.
