In 1997, a fire tore through a 17-story hotel in the seaside resort town of Pattaya, Thailand, killing at least 78 people and injuring more than 50, according to Discovery News. It was this disaster that inspired Thai inventor Phanawatnan Kaimart to find an easier way to put out fires. A year later, Kaimart created the Elide Fireball, a device that allowed ordinary people to put out fires without a fire extinguisher or training.
People just need to take a 1.5 kg ball hanging on the wall near the fire and throw it into the fire. The ball acts as an alarm bell, emitting a loud sound to warn and then automatically spraying fire-extinguishing chemicals.
The device is designed to be thrown by the user from a distance of at least two metres from the fire. If the fire lasts longer than eight minutes, firefighters are called in to deal with it. According to the manufacturer, the chemicals in the ball are non-toxic and do not affect the environment.
