(Baonghean) - Taking advantage of the potential of land fund and the people's economic garden farming practices, Giang Son Dong commune has advocated introducing the Dien grapefruit growing model to many hamlets. The initial effectiveness of the models creates the premise for the commune to continue to expand the investment efficiency of this valuable fruit tree.

Present at the Dien grapefruit field of Mr. Dao Danh Bay's household - Xuan Thinh hamlet, Giang Son Dong commune, it was known that this year Mr. Bay and his family decided to renovate the mixed garden and plant 200 more trees, bringing the total number of Dien grapefruit trees on the family hill to nearly 1,000 trees. The grapefruit tree has been with him for nearly 10 years, since he directly visited the model of growing grapefruit in Lang Dien (Hanoi). Attached to Dien grapefruit trees, Mr. Bay said that this is not a new tree but the model in the district and commune has not yet existed. Grapefruit is easy to grow, it is necessary to treat the planting hole with lime, add manure and irrigation water. To be effective, the seedling stage must select healthy trees with clear origin. The technical process must ensure economic efficiency.

Thanks to good care, after 3 years of planting grapefruit trees on hilly garden land, from the first 30 grapefruit trees, he has planned nearly 800 Dien grapefruit trees that are at harvest age. He said: The grapefruit is round, ripe with a beautiful bright yellow color, sweet, soft, harvested right on time for Tet sale so it is very valuable. From the beginning of the year until now, the family has harvested over 9,000 fruits, an average of 1.2 - 1.5 kg/fruit, with a garden price of 35,000 VND/fruit, earning nearly 300 million VND/year. According to Mr. Bay, thanks to the good quality of grapefruit, before the harvest season, traders in Do Luong, Vinh City, Ha Tinh came to the place to deposit to buy. In recent years, the market demand for Dien grapefruit has increased so there is not enough to sell. Currently, he is coordinating with the Central Institute of Plant Varieties to act as an agent to supply Dien grapefruit varieties to people, an average of over 200 trees/year. He also expanded the grapefruit farm by raising more than 200 free-range chickens and digging a 1.5 hectare fish pond to increase income.

Along with this model, from 2013 to now, the Dien grapefruit growing model of Mr. Nguyen Huu Vinh - Nam Tan hamlet has also shown clear economic efficiency. The model currently grows 100 Dien grapefruit trees for an average income of nearly 80 - 100 million VND/year. According to Mr. Vinh, in the near future, he is calculating the purchase of more hill garden land to expand about 400 Dien grapefruit trees to supply products to the market.

Giang Son Dong was separated from the old Giang Son commune. Although it is a newly separated locality, the economic infrastructure is not yet synchronized, but the natural conditions and the tradition of intensive cultivation of commercial crops of the people have many advantages. The commune is located on National Highway 15A, bordering Tan Ky and Yen Thanh districts, creating favorable conditions for the consumption of agricultural products for farmers. The whole commune currently has a large natural land fund, agricultural production land accounts for ¼ of the total natural area, mostly garden land, hillside, not too steep and less scattered. The people are hard-working and diligent. Those advantages are the potential for building new effective models of seedlings on garden land.

Constantly concerned with the economic development direction of the locality, in recent years, the Party Committee and the government of Giang Son Tay commune have issued annual thematic resolutions on economic development, prioritizing the construction of high-income fields. After land conversion, the commune has encouraged people to give up land and exchange land with each other to create large areas to expand commodity monoculture with models that generate income of hundreds of millions of VND/year/model, typically 60 hectares of sugarcane in Pho hamlet, Lien Giang, Hoa Binh; 5 hectares of high-income vegetables growing squash, shallots, and watermelon in Hoa Binh hamlet, Tay Xuan, Yen Tan. In particular, in the past 2 years, many models of growing Dien grapefruit in Xuan Thinh and Nam Tan have shown irreplaceable effectiveness on Giang Son Dong hill garden land.

Mr. Nguyen Quang Thanh - Vice Chairman of Giang Son Dong Commune People's Committee said: In order to develop the model of growing Dien grapefruit into a commodity, the Commune People's Committee has a policy of mobilizing people to eliminate mixed gardens, directing the heads and deputy heads of the Youth Union and Association of 19 hamlets to organize seminars in their local gardens. In the context of limited local budget, the commune is currently building a 0.5 hectare model to grow 170 Quang Tien pink grapefruit seedlings at Mr. Le Van Long's household - Thinh Dong hamlet. The model is invested 100% in seedlings by the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center, and supported 30% of manure in the first 4 years. Currently, the grapefruit seedlings have been handed over by the commune and the District Agricultural Extension Station to families for planting in the early spring crop. It is expected that the model will be successful, the commune will continue to coordinate with the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center to invest in focusing on commercial grapefruit trees, expanding about 10 - 20 models to supply delicious grapefruit products to the domestic market.

Currently, Giang Son Dong Commune People's Committee is developing a plan to advise the district and Party Committee to issue a Commune Party Resolution on the project to promote the development of industrial crops, commercial vegetables, and fruit trees such as jujube, Taiwanese guava, pink grapefruit, and Dien grapefruit. In addition to rice, corn, and forestry, fruit trees are considered important. Areas with key crops must be selected and focused on large-scale production from the beginning. If the potential for commodity development is large, there must be projects and incentive policies to expand.
