Things to do first when staying at a hotel
Checking for bed bugs under the bed, in hidden corners of the room, or posting a "do not disturb" sign are some of the things you should do before unpacking and retiring.
All you want to do is kick off your shoes and relax, but there are more important things to do before you hit the sack.
Check for bed bugs under the bed
Check under your mattress, headboard, and bed frame for bed bugs. Make sure you check every corner of your bed, as bed bugs are tiny brown specks that are hard to see and hide during the day but disappear in a flash when spotted. They can bite you, leave behind painful welts, or even transmit dangerous diseases.

Sanitation check
Your room may look clean, but that doesn't mean it's hygienic. Housekeeping staff may scrub the bathroom, but they may not regularly clean the most germ-ridden areas like TV and air conditioner remotes, light switches, doorknobs, etc. So take a few minutes to clean these items to ensure you can enjoy your vacation safely and healthily.

Check hidden corners in the room
Before unpacking your locked hotel room, check these hidden corners to make sure you’re alone: under the bed, in the closet, in the bathroom, and behind the curtains. A bad guy could have snuck in before you and been hiding in the room, or even something more dangerous to your life and property. There have been reports of guests complaining about a horrible smell after checking in and finding a dead body under the bed after checking in. So, do this to be safe.
Remove sheets and blankets
Pillowcases are easy to wash, but sheets and blankets are not. Hotel staff don’t even clean sheets after dozens of guests, even in luxury hotels. According to a former manager of a famous hotel chain in the US, hotels sometimes only change sheets and blankets about four times a year. Even blankets with replaceable covers are not safe, so take those creepy things off before you hit the sack.

Hang a "Do Not Disturb" sign
Unless you want your room cleaned or have an urgent request, put a "Do Not Disturb" sign on your door when you enter. Make sure to take it down every morning before you leave so the staff can do their cleaning for you.
