British scientists have developed an anti-aging chocolate product that promises to help the skin structure of 50-year-old women become as youthful as that of 20-year-old girls.

Esthecho, a chocolate product developed by a team of researchers at the University of Cambridge, UK, can slow the appearance of wrinkles or sagging skin by increasing antioxidants and improving blood circulation, the Telegraph reported today. A 7.5g anti-aging chocolate bar contains the same amount of antioxidant astaxanthin as a slice of Alaskan salmon and the same amount of free radical-fighting polyphenols as 100g of dark chocolate.

According to the manufacturer, Esthecho helps improve the underlying skin structure, making women in their 50s and 60s look as young as they do in their 20s and 30s. Tests showed that after 4 weeks of eating anti-aging chocolate every day, volunteers showed fewer signs of inflammation in their blood, and blood supply to skin tissues also increased.

"We used the same antioxidants that help maintain the yellow color of goldfish and the pink color of flamingos. When we did clinical trials, we saw that inflammation in the skin started to decrease and there were many benefits on the tissues," said Dr. Ivan Petyaev, a former researcher at the University of Cambridge and founder of biotechnology company Lycotec.

According to Dr. Ivan Petyaev, each chocolate bar contains only 38 kcal, so it is very safe for people with kidney disease. The product will be officially introduced at the Global Food Innovation Summit in London, England, next month.

However, health experts are quite cautious about Esthecho and say more extensive clinical trials are needed to prove the powerful anti-aging effects of the new chocolate.

"There are biological reasons to think that some compounds have benefits in slowing down aging and preventing disease. But on the other hand, eating too much chocolate leads to consuming more calories, leading to obesity and losing the overall effect," said Naveed Sattar, professor of metabolism at the University of Glasgow, UK.

Nutritionists at the University of London, UK, also warned that previous trials showed that astaxanthin worked better when applied directly to the face rather than through the digestive tract.
