Tuition, gas push up prices

The education group's price index increased by 7.19% compared to the previous month due to the tuition fee increase at the beginning of the year, pushing the CPI in September up 0.54%.

The General Statistics Office has just announced the consumer price index (CPI) for September 2016, according to which the CPI increased by 0.54% compared to the previous month and increased by 3.34% compared to the same period last year. Of which, the price index of the education group increased by 7.19% compared to the previous month, in which tuition fees increased by 8.36% compared to the previous month.

The transportation group also increased sharply by 0.55%, culture, entertainment and tourism increased by 0.18%, clothing, hats, and footwear increased by 0.14%... Only the telecommunications service group decreased by 0.07%.

According to the General Statistics Office, the sharp increase in education index was due to the adjustment of tuition fees at the beginning of the school year in 53 provinces and cities. During the month, the demand for school supplies such as clothes, hats, and books increased, pushing the consumer price index up 0.14% compared to the previous month.

The second most significant increase was in the transportation group, up 0.55%, mainly due to gasoline price increases on August 19 and September 5.In addition, due to the chain effect, bus and taxi fares also increased slightly, contributing to the overall increase of the group.

After two consecutive months of decline, the price index of this group of goods has increased again, recording a 0.09% increase compared to the previous month, of which food increased by 0.16%, foodstuff increased by 0.1% and eating out increased by 0.04%.

Two commodities not included in the general price index, gold and the US dollar, moved in opposite directions. While the price of gold decreased by 0.36%, the price of the dollar increased by 0.07% compared to the previous month.
