Veu village women "pick up letters" to eliminate poverty
After each hard working day in the fields, the Thai ethnic women in Trong hamlet, Cao Veu village (Phuc Son commune, Anh Son district) take the time to go to the literacy class organized by the soldiers of Border Post 557, to "pick up" each letter to erase the poverty and backwardness of a highland village.
Ms. Vi Thi Luan in Trong hamlet, Cao Veu village is over 50 years old this year. Life was difficult and hard, so it took her more than half her life to have the opportunity to go to class to learn each letter. Knowing how to read and write, Ms. Luan learned about business techniques through books and newspapers, thanks to which her family's life became much less difficult.
She confided: "Thanks to being literate, I know how to do business, intensively grow squash and pumpkin, and earn 20 million VND each year." Not only Ms. Luan, all 25 women in Trong hamlet, Cao Veu village also have the opportunity to attend the class. The class is held regularly 4 sessions/week.
Teacher Dang Quang Nghia - mass mobilization team of station 557 said: Of the total 25 students in the class, 2/3 of the students are old, illiterate, and have to worry about both studying and family work, so their ability to absorb lessons is still limited.
But in return, all the women had determination, so after a few weeks of studying, they learned to read and write. Now they can read and write fluently. Thanks to that, they have the opportunity to study books and newspapers on science and technology, to apply those advances to livestock production, and to increase the production value on cultivated land.
Currently, the poverty rate of women has decreased significantly. Although there are still many difficulties and shortages, it is hoped that from the letters that women collect, a bright future will come to Cao Veu village.
