The Western economy develops rapidly and comprehensively.
(Baonghean) -Western Nghe An consists of 10 districts and towns, with a population of 1.1 million people, accounting for 83.4% of the natural land area. With the attention and investment of the Party and the State, this area is undergoing remarkable changes.
Implementing Resolution 37/NQTVV/2004 of the Politburo, the People's Committee of Nghe An province has developed the "Socio-economic Development Project of the Western Region to 2010". The project was approved by the Prime Minister in Decision No. 147/2005/QD-TTg. After 5 years of efforts, Nghe An has achieved remarkable results.
In the past time, the Central Government and Nghe An province have prioritized many projects (total investment capital for the whole period 2006 - 2010 reached 27,081 billion VND). Since then, the average economic growth rate in the period has reached 11.92% (the growth rate of the whole province in this period is 9.54%/year). In the project submitted to the Government, the province set a target of striving to achieve an average income per capita of 8.5 million VND/person/year in the whole region by the end of 2010; currently it has reached an average of 11.8 million VND/person/year (the whole province averages 13.85 million VND). The current poverty rate is only 25%. However, in the three remote districts: Ky Son, Tuong Duong and Que Phong, the average living standard is lower; the poverty rate is still high.

Thanks to many effective projects, the total annual added value reached 12,543 billion VND, 110% of the plan. In 2010, the local budget revenue reached 397 billion VND and goods export reached 45 million USD.
The economic structure shifted in the right direction, gradually reducing the proportion of agriculture, forestry and fishery, increasing industry and services. Industry increased from 28.5% to 29.85% (the proportion of industry and construction in the whole province was 33.47%). In particular, services increased faster, from 26.2% to 29.85% thanks to the opening of a trade network to each village and the formation of a number of valuable tourist routes, and especially transportation services increased significantly due to large investments in the transportation system.
In the development plan for the period 2011-2015, the western region of Nghe An will receive an investment of 84,000 billion VND, prioritizing 78 key projects; achieving a growth rate of 13.38%/year; average income of 27.4 million VND/person/year (average of the whole Nghe An province in 2015 was 30 million/person/year).
