(Baonghean) - The 10th grade entrance exam for the 2011-2012 school year in Nghe An has just ended. What is easily seen is that: localities and secondary schools have done a good job of student streaming right from secondary school; students have had choices appropriate to their level and ability.
Do a good job of traffic flow
Since the end of May, high schools in the province have publicly announced enrollment targets and expected admission scores for students to register their appropriate wishes.According to the enrollment plan of the Department of Education and Training, n2011 - 2012 school year will recruit41,710 students for 980 classes (accounting for 77.85% of grade 9 students), including 767 public classes with 32,100 students (accounting for 59.91%); 143 private and non-public classes with 6,395 students (accounting for 11.94%); 70 cultural supplementary classes with 3,215 students (accounting for 06.0%).
Candidates sign to submit their exam papers at the Examination Council of Ha Huy Tap High School (Vinh City)
In fact, about 23% of students after graduating from junior high school will not continue to study the general education program. That means the exam will screen and select qualified students, reaching a certain level to continue studying the high school program. As for students who do not meet the standards, it does not mean that their studies have ended, but the remaining junior high school graduates will continue to pursue their studies in another way. That is professional education to complete the high school program and have the opportunity to become skilled workers, with techniques to meet the needs of society. Therefore, junior high schools have paid attention to career guidance to help students orient their future, choose a direction suitable to their abilities and qualifications. Specifically, in the 2010-2011 school year, Nghe An had 53,550 grade 9 students but only 45,987 candidates took the entrance exam for grade 10 in the 2011-2012 school year. This means that 7,563 students will choose vocational schools. Typical examples of good streaming include Yen Thanh district with 968 students not registering for the 10th grade entrance exam, Quynh Luu district with 834, Nghi Loc with 454 and Vinh city with 372 students not taking the 10th grade entrance exam.
Near-peak schools attract candidates
Ms. Pham Thi Minh (a trader at Quan Lau market, whose child is taking the entrance exam to Le Viet Thuat High School) said: This is an important exam, deciding the future of the child and the family. If the child passes the entrance exam to public schools, the family that does not have the conditions like mine will reduce the burden of tuition fees... My child has good academic performance, so if he registers his first choice to Le Viet Thuat High School, the chance of passing the entrance exam as well as later on will be higher, therefore the competition among candidates in this exam will be higher.
Most candidates have made many calculations in choosing their wishes. Only those with good and fair academic performance throughout 4 years of secondary school register for the schools with the highest admission scores last year. Therefore, the schools near the top are the schools with the largest number of registered candidates. Leading the way is Dien Chau 5 High School, which recruited 504 students for grade 10, but had 1,234 candidates register for the exam; Le Viet Thuat High School recruited 546/1,169 students registered for the exam; Quynh Luu 2 recruited 588/1,163; Dien Chau 4 recruited 546/1,149; in the highlands, Ky Son Ethnic Minority School had 630/990 candidates register for the entrance exam for grade 10 in the 2011-2012 school year.
With such a high "competition" rate, most candidates consider this as a university entrance exam, each candidate must "keep confidential" their own test, cannot share with other candidates. And in the exam room, if any candidate is discovered to be copying, flipping through documents or being "assisted" by the supervisor, they will speak up, because that is necessary to ensure their rights... As for students with good academic performance, they want to get the maximum score to continue taking the exam to enter specialized schools and specialized groups.
Serious exam
Responding to the legitimate needs of candidates for a fair and serious exam, and above all for high schools, this is an entrance exam that determines the quality of the school in the future. Therefore, schools organize exams seriously and objectively, and exam room discipline is tightened. "Each school takes care of its own quality, the entrance exam for grade 10 is like the university entrance exam, if the exam is organized seriously and objectively, good and excellent students will be selected. High input, high quality." Teacher Nguyen Dinh Cuong - Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Ha Huy Tap High School, said.
To ensure the quality of input, in addition to tightening exam room discipline, the Department of Education and Training directed the examination councils not to arrange teachers who teach math, literature and foreign languages to invigilate the exam for that subject. In addition, the Department allows schools to combine many separate solutions to tighten the exam. For example, increasing the security force outside the examination council, the security force inside the examination council is only arranged by district police, district military, absolutely not arranging local police and school security; limiting the situation where candidates' relatives "entrust" their children to exam invigilators. The examination council arranges exam rooms by subject, candidates only know their exam room when they enter the exam area 45 minutes before the exam time; exam invigilators draw lots for exam rooms for each subject. To ensure the quality of input, some schools plan not to follow the quota, but if the standard score is low, they will reduce the number of candidates per class.
The 10th grade entrance exam for the 2011-2012 school year was held by 66 high schools, with 45,987 candidates taking the exam in 1,971 exam rooms. To conduct the exam well, Nghe An mobilized more than 4,533 officials, teachers, more than 204 inspectors and 874 police officers to protect the exam. The rate of candidates violating the regulations was not high, but with 13 candidates being suspended from the exam due to violating the exam regulations (including 10 students using documents, 1 student bringing a cell phone into the exam room and 2 students arriving 15 minutes late), it partly reflects the seriousness of the exam.
The 10th grade entrance exam has ended, there are inevitable shortcomings but it can be affirmed that this is a serious exam, highly appreciated by the people and society. I think that the education sector as well as schools must maintain the exam discipline like the entrance exam for the first 3 years of high school. With a new precedent, new thinking and new ways of doing things, no one will worry about the high or low graduation rate. That will be the real result of a truly serious and fair exam.
